Good news! Everyone was asking for it - and finally, here it is. Linode just announced a new hosting plan to their offering: $5 per month for a 1 GB VPS.

Now they really are the best in all aspects (quality, reliability, price) out of all major VPS providers.

Linode 1GB
$5/mo

([SUP]$[/SUP].0075/hr)

1 GB RAM
1 CPU Core
20 GB SSD Storage
1 TB Transfer
40 Gbps Network In
1000 Mbps Network Out

Nice servers for the price but I doubt this include management.

It doesn't. All their plans are unmanaged but have an option for "managed support" for $100 per month.

Still, they are the best for an unmanaged VPS. Once/if they go cheaper than OVH, they'll literally be the best (unmanaged) VPS provider out there. Probably.

I mean, yeah, that's a lot. But they are not even trying to compete in the managed VPS market. They focus on unmanaged VPS/Cloud and they are damn good at that.

If you do need a managed VPS, then Linode is definitely not the right choice. But if you don't need a managed VPS, then Linode is a great choice.

It's amazing how Linode seem to be able to compete and survive after all those huge DDOS attacks that leaves all their customers hanging.

Anyway with this announcement, the VPS market seems to be turning into the mid-2000 shared hosting where everybody kept forcing their price down until it pretty much cost nothing, before suddenly all the "unlimited" hosting pops up. I'd expect unlimited storage* and bandwidth* VPS to come out in the next 3 years from the big hosting guys who target a more average-consumer types to compete.

*of course, it's not truly unlimited. please refer to page 52 of our 74 page TOS where we mentioned you can only use 1% of your CPU at all time

Not surprising to see Linode have the best CPU score and DO still the weakest among those three, as that's been a long-held complaint. I don't understand the post-installation disk figures though, they seem very far apart. Is the RAM the most influencing factor for this figure? Also, very nice comprehensive benchmarking script, if only it runs on other distro as well :D

Allthough it is cheap but can not compare pricing with VPS plans from OVH, onoline dot net or scaleway
