I prefer software firewalls myself, CSF is very good imo and has everything a modern firewall requires. Hardware firewall have a good place at the network boundary but can often cause problems instead of keeping the network open and filtering at the server level.

Depends on what your trying to block. Are you worried about emailing or what?

i prefer to use csf and lfd, you can block incoming connection using csf, also csf is very usefull with lots of tweeks you can handle your server smoothly.

Most used are software firewall like CSF, APF, IPtables rules. This helps in reducing hardware firewall cost. But if important at times Hardware firewall is also recommended.

We are Big Believers in a good setup with iptables and Fail2ban

CSF and APF , both are quite good for Linux based IPTables Firewall . It can be integrated into Dedicated Server.
If you can, add on Fail2Ban, it will increase difficulties for hacker brute force to your server.

Another +1 for CSF/LFD. I've used it for many years and love it, super easy to set up and very well documented online.
I combine it with CloudFlare's WAF with no issues at all.
