Recent time I have got high load on my VPS, I installed CSF (Config Server Firewall) on CentOS 6 but it could not tell me which IP or source is making my VPS high load. I want to install a firewall which allow me to automatically block malicious IPs or bots. I heard about fail2ban but not sure it can help. Any advice?

CSF is to block the attacks. It helps to mitigate the DDOS attacks at some level however in order to find out which IPs are attacking your server is some thing that needs to be find out as CSF will just block the attacks that is it will block the IPs. On the other hand server load issues can cause due to the services running on the server such as mysql , any user trying to eat all the resources so you need to find it out what exactly happening on the server .

Use the top command to check the processes on the server and whats happening on the server and it give you an idea.

We used to be a big fan of APF but now that CSF is independant, CSF hands down now. The key with CSF is to enabled features such as flooding, sync, modsec, and connection limits. Properly configured CSF can do exactly what you need.

ct_limitset to 100 or 150 is highly recommended.

synflood, portflood are other settings to take a close look at.

Do note, often it can be bot or pingback attack which you can also mitigate at the application layer.

CSF (Config Server Firewall) , is the best free firewall for Linux servers, but there are better, but they are not free.
What are paid ones in this case that you consider is better CSF?
I want to know some names.

CSF (Config Server Firewall) is all you would want.
I am wondering why you recommended CSF as the best firewall for linux?

Because it's good and why do you think something that cost money will perform better than CSF or any other free one ?

Because it will give us better support and updates, I used to buy paid CMS to develop websites instead of using free ones. Some free ones always include advertising into their software or limitations.

For example, you can see hosting panels like cPanel, Plesk, Directadmin,..they are paid ones and they are better than free hosting panels, right?
