Should you pay for your hosting services yearly or monthly?

On my current web hosting I am paying monthly. Now I need a new hosting, I found some good one here. I found a domain name but now I want to have a good price, I think paying yearly then I will have big discounts. Is that correct? but there are some problems if I pay yearly? What do you consider the best annual hosting service? How would shared, VPS or cloud hosting work in this case? which one should I stick with?
Any good annual plans for shared, vps and cloud hosting? Please share your thoughts?

Thanks
David

To answer your question, since most web hosts will not offer pro-rated refunds, its important that you have faith that the service you are purchasing will be stable during the year you have signed up for. I cant tell you how many times I see clients signing up for 2-3 years in advance to take advantage of an offer only to find themselves looking for a new web host 3 months in.

My advice, if you have not worked with the company before. Initially sign-up for monthly billing terms and then once you are confident in the service you are receiving (after x amount of months), switch to yearly.

I used to pay monthly for my hosting but if my provider gives me discounts or coupon codes if using many months, I often pay 6 months once. It's always a great deal if you can have lower pricing for services you are using.

Never pay yearly until you have built a good relationship with your provider and are confident in the service. I would also not fall into the trap for huge discounts for 3 year plans etc.
If it was me I would pay monthly for a year then renew annual if I was happy.

A lot of hosts do not discount for yearly payment plans. Some do. I think paying monthly is a great option and gives you the option of leaving when you want if needed. LJSHost has a good plan of paying monthly for a year to check the service then maybe switch to annual payments.

As others have mentioned...go for monthly.

Only after you and the host have built a relationship could you then look into yearly.

I think that if you trust a web host and are SURE that there won't be any issues/problems than paying by the year would be ok as long as there is some kind of discount or other incentive to do so.

If you are going with a host that you don't know then you might wat to go monthly, even if it's more money.

I have had this come back and bite me on the backside by paying by the year. I had issues with the host and their support and customer service was horrible. They only did refunds (pro-rated) up to 30 days and the problems started around the 2 month mark or so. Now I will not pay by the year for hosting unless I completely trust the host and know that everything will be great with them.

I think once you've found "the best web host for you" then go yearly, until then only pay monthly.

Hi David,

I would pay from 3 to 6 months if they can give me big discounts for plans for a long term, but don't like paying yearly, it is more risks if their hosting service decrease quality of services or they can change their business.

Yearly for the huge providers.
Monthly for all the rest, it safer and eliminates a lot of risks. Too much can happen in 1 year.

I always use this way when starting with a new hosting company.
Buying 6 months or a year later if they have good discounts and when I trusted their services are quality, that's not a problem.

I prefer paying yearly as I get to enjoy lower cost with yearly payment as compared to monthly payment. It is more cost efficient if you are planning to use the service long term :)

Valid point , it reduces cost of hosting rather than going for monthly plan, but on the other hand clients need to check our their history with the company , like are they good enough to be paid annually, do they offer me good support, is speed ,performance and uptime good with this company and when the answer is YES its always good to go annual and grab the heavy discount offer.

I agree with webhostuk!
I saw some hosting companies were sold to other hosting companies although they have acted in the field for years.
That's why more people wanted to go with a hosting company with good history.

we personally allow monthly up to yearly, it all depends on your budget, but yes ordering yearly makes more sense especially since shared hosting is Usually cheap...

If you trust your provider I support yearly payment it should be cheaper, I support it also if there are discounts.

As a provider and user, I find it is best to do it month to month, 3 months at a time tops. Paying in advance just to get a deal, as mentioned, almost always ends with a person changing their mind before the first year is even up.

It is better to pay monthly with reoccurring billing that way your paying for what you get, also consider it is just a few dollars to host a website not like a new car where your talking thousands of dollars or a new home, so just select a good plan that will meet your needs, pay by pay-pal reoccurring and with a thirty day money back you will never be out any money.

Hello David,

You should only pay yearly, if you have complete trust in the host. As a recommendation, I'd use them on a monthly or queartely plan for a few months, before moving to a yearly plan.

I'd also check for reviews on WebHostingTalk and other forums as well making sure the staff are good enough for your neeeds, and you check if you can easily upgrade to a VPS or higher and only have to pay the difference for remaining months.

Paying yearly is giving a lot of trust to your supplier. You never know where they may be / not be in a few months time and could catch you out. 6 months sounds a little better
