In my hosting control panel, I saw two types of IP address

i.e

Internal IP
15.148.0.3

and

External IP
156.162.10.135

What is the difference between Internal IP and External IP? and which IP address will I use to assign for my nameservers in my hosting control panel?

You will use the external IP.

i will give you a very simple view of how internal and external ip addresses work (please note this is a very simplified definition for you to get started and understand it, after you get this and need more answers about IP just let me know or let the forum know)

the difference is that the internal is used for internal network purposes. e.g: if you have multiple computers in your house, they will each have a different internal IP address which allows communication within the network.

however you will all have one external IP address as to the cloud you are all one computer (because you are connected to one line of internet).

after a packet or frame of data is sent to your external IP address, it will then identify the computer using the internal IP address.

if you are starting a hosting company you will barely need the internal IP.

for name servers you tend to need to IP addresses.

e.g. ns1.yourhosting.com has one ip and ns2.yourhosting.com has its own ip (usually all of the ip is the same except the last two numbers)

Kind Regards

internal IP is only accessable from their internal network.

A external IP is accessable the world.

You want your nameservers/domains to point to your external IP.

A internal IP is only useful if you have multiple servers on the same network. Then you can use the internal IP to talk to them.

Internal address:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

Are for use on internal networks and are not routable on the public internet.

An external IP can be used on the internet, the external address is what you need to use for your name servers.

Would you mind explain in more details for this? or an example?

Internal address:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

So I don't need to use internet IP for any setup or configurations on my VPS/severs?

I just am curious why my hosting provide show me internal IP in my hosting control panel.

Your hosting might have their own reasons for assigning your server an internal and external IP.
Just use your external IP for everything you need on your server.

Perhaps contact your hosting firm and ask why you also have a internal IP if your that curious about it.

internal IP is just accessable using their internal network.

A exterior IP is accessable the planet.

You would like your nameservers/domain names to suggest for your exterior IP.

A internal IP is just helpful for those who have multiple servers on a single network. You'll be able to make use of the internal IP to speak to them.

Internal IP addresses are private and external IP addresses are public. Using internal IP address a system can be identified within the local area network whereas using a external IP address or public IP address a system can located globally. For example: An organization using telephone number to identify it. It uses EPABX, It's a local exchange with some intercom numbers to identify different sections in the organization.

Thanks for the detailed answers. I was also looking for answers related to internal and external IP even though I knew internal IP is the IP associated with my computer and external IP is from the Internet Service Privider. When you use internet, you will be using exertal IP and when you connect your computer to another computer, youn will be using internal IP.

The external is the one that you get assigned by your internet provider, so basically when you visit any website, that website will see your external IP or external address.
The internal is the one that you get assigned by your router, so if 3 devices are connect to your router, then each one will have a different internal IP or internal address.

Public IP or External IP is used across entire Internet to locate devices and Internal IP is used in private network.

Internal IP is an IP from the private IP ranges and it's accessible only from the internal network. External IP, on the other hand, is an IP from the public IP ranges and it's accessible from the public network. Your computer probably has a public IP assigned from public IP range and your router on the WAN port probably has a external IP assigned.

Hi There,

In My Own Understanding and Opinion, Internal IP Address is the ones you have at your LAN or we rather say Local Area Network Which is Different from WAN or Wide Area Network which is the Address depends on your ISP or Internet Service Provider. It's Just Simply as that LAN is your Computer Address on the Local Area you are at. and WAN is the address you have or Global Address, Also Bot Addresses is Very Confidential. There's a big Chance Hackers can penetrate your network if they knew the WAN Address you have.

When you used to take the internet connection using router or any other device, that time your internet service provider used to assign IP address to it that is external IP address. It is for communication between the computer and internet. This is public IP address. Due to it, your internet service provider comes to know that which customer is requesting which web page.

When you computer gets connected to the router or the device that time computer automatically gets IP address assigned to it that is internal IP address. It is for local network connection. This is the private IP address.

External ip address and internal IP addresses both have the same purpose, to locate the device.
The only difference lies in the range of area in which it can work.
External IP address works where there is internet. It works across the globe.
It can locate a computer in any region of this world.
Internal IP address works for a particular region and network.
Here all computers are connected by lan wire. Here the number of computer is generally 20 to 30.
