Hello everyone,

I am planning to purchase XenForo cms to start a new forum for bloggers but before that I'd like to know first what is the best hosting for forums? I already have got my domain from Namecheap and while making a research for the best hosting for forums I found out that some of the popular hosting companies on forum but I am not sure they are quality hosting because I have not ever used them before. Also I heard that Xenforo need special hostings to run it because it requires more resources of the server.

I'll wait for your advice.

Hi !
To have good performance with Xenforo, you should look to a small vps. Because prices to host a CMS like Xenforo with good performance, will have the same price per month than a small vps. It use a lot of memory to run PHP.
But anyway, buy something with PHP7 support, 4 times faster than PHP5.6. It will make the difference for all your CMS.

How much RAM do I need for a small VPS to run Xenforo with average 700 visitors per day?

I have not ever heard of this. Can I upgrade php version any time?

Under 10k visitors day any VPS with 2GB RAM and SSD will be good. 4$ -> OVH.

To be as clear as possible. There is two performance indice with any hosting.

1) Brut Perf -> speed of your website with no visitors
2) Charge Perf -> speed when you have a lot of traffic

With share hosting there is no difference as your website is hosted with others. With VPS it's better because you have "dedicated" (virtual) amount of ressources.

PHP7 is really new (v7.0.5) and many framework or program are not compatible with it yet. So most shared hosting will not install php7 at the moment/

If you have a VPS you can upgrade when you want as you have a root access to your server.

Hi wpspeedster!

Xenforo is up on my list of favorite forum software. Although I'm more of a IPB guy myself. Leto12 is right having 2 GB of RAM will absolutely give you a good edge with your website load times. Might I recommend the Tier 2 plan. This way you can get started small and grow along with your forum.

I thought it depends on number of CPUs of your hosting, not RAM.

How is speed up your website with no visitors, I have not ever heard this term or technique.

$4 for OVH, I heard of this hosting provider, their dedicated servers could be from $70+ for each server. You are saying to shared hosting plans?

Both CPUs and RAM normally work together depending on what software you are using and why. High RAM on a VPS is very much recommended considering MySQL needs sufficient amounts of RAM to run smoothly. You can find hosting plans like ours that allow you 1 CPU and 2 GB of dedicated RAM. A database server's job is to provide really fast access to data, so the CPU speed is less important than the speed of access to the data (disks and RAM). But obviously if you're using a lot of math / calculations in your queries, you need more CPU resources.

When I first opened my site I bought a vps from OVH and it was perfect! It ran really well, but then I decided to go back to shared hosting due to my site not being big enough for a powerful server.

VPS SSD 2
OpenStack KVM
1 vCore
2.4 GHz
4 GB RAM
20 GB SSD
Local RAID 10

$8.99/month but with cpanel it's like $27/month

Why cPanel ? ^^ -> OVH don't work with cPanel (not as partner) so cPanel is expensive.
But they work with Plesk :)
Web Admin License (limited to 10 domains) : Free with VPS Cloud, $2.79/month on VPS SSD.Web Pro Licence (limited to 30 domains): $6.29/month
But you should try serverpilot.io if you don't want to use command line. It's a remote control panel, so no resources usage, and it's free.

All package are unmanaged. But like most of web hosting use the word "managed" for talking about cPanel ...
You have 90 linux distro ready to start and some apps. And yes you can easily install CWP or directadmin (can be install directly from your customer interface).

It might be worth you giving a few more details, such as your budget, whether you want shared or VPS (and if the latter, managed or unmanaged) and where you would prefer the servers to be located.

My recommendation would be Nimbus Hosting, who offer managed VPS hosting based in the UK.
