Hello RainMaker,

First you will have to purchase a SSL certificate. We always recommend GeoTrust and it is what we use on our own site.

Once you purchase the certificate, you should receive instructions for creating the certificate key on your hosting plan.

Once the SSL certificate has been issued, you will need it install it on your hosting plan and set your site to use HTTPS.

Your hosting provider should be willing to help you through this process and even install the cert for you.

You're also going to have to have your site verified by a third party vendor if you're running eCommerce, and some of them are a real pain. If you're concerned about the weight assigned by Google to SSL enabled sites, they only assign a very small weight to that currently, and some sites have reported a brief drop in ranking initially - while some report never recovering.

That is not a requirement for have a SSL.

If you need PCI DSS compliance, you would need a SSL, and 3rd party scans, (among other things), but not just to have a SSL.

I preceded that with 'if they were running eCommerce' to make them aware of other considerations.
