Why do people fail at internet marketing? This is one hot topic that even up to this day you'll find tons of new discussions, articles and resources being added to the web on a daily basis.

There really is no doubt that this is a serious topic, which deserves attention with knowing what mistakes people make when it comes to internet marketing. For most people trying to make it online it is clear that most continue to experience epic failure.

So with that in mind let's talk about those blunders so that you can hopefully avoid making them with getting closer to achieving your online ambition.

Here are common reasons why people fail at online marketing.

1. Lack of marketing focus
Some people run too fast, missing too much along the way.
One thing: They don't know what they want—one of the most common internet marketing mistakes, starting by not having a clear goal.
Example: For many it is all about traffic, but it's not. In fact it's about conversion. After all you could have thousands of web visitors and zero sales which would mean you really need to focus your energy with improving your website.
So if you're focused on the wrong goal the realize that you're most likely doing it all wrong and most probably wasting your effort, time and money.

2. Lack of competitor research and monitoring
Many internet marketers fail because they're unaware of what their competitors do.
If this is you, solve the problem by keeping an eye on your competitors, knowing what they are doing and implementing effective marketing techniques that they use which would suit your business.

3. Not mobile-ready
Yes, you got that right.
And the truth is that the internet has gone mobile but many business owners aren't prepared for a responsive website that adapts to mobile devices, which are what most web surfers use to access the internet.
[Mobile media time is at 51% versus desktop media time with only 42% share. (Smart Insights)

4. Not tracking performance
People fail at internet marketing because they don't track their campaign's performance and check which ones work and which ones do not.
Just imagine. If you have spent $300 on Facebook advertising, don't you want to see how much you are getting back from it?
If you want to check on your metrics, use free tools, including Google Analytics that can give you a clear picture of which part of your campaign (to rinse-and-repeat later) work for you.

5. Not frequently updating their site's content
People fail at internet marketing because they don't update their website content, including blogs and news, resulting to poor ranking on searches. So when visitors check into their site, they're like saying, Hello? Is anybody home?”
Don't make visitors feel alone or they are on another planet with an outdated website content which is rarely updated.

FACT: Recent Google algorithm changes are more likely to favor sites with updated content, which means you have to publish new content at regular interval as often as possible, although I will say this certainly does not apply to every niche once a website has established itself as an authority on a given subject
That does not mean you have to neglect quality though, but you still have to focus on creating compelling, valuable content so that you can build your name in your industry.

There you have the five biggest internet marketing blunders you cannot afford to make; otherwise, your business might suffer, not only from poor rankings but also from low conversions.

Some of them also fail because of lack of knowledge about internet marketing.

I think a lot of people come into this industry expecting to just pour money into some traffic, send them to a pre-made sales page, and profit. It just doesn't work that way. It takes consistent, focused effort to see real results here.

Mindset is also a crucial factor. Early failures make people quit because their mindset sucks. Everyone has failures along the way to success, the point of them is learn from them and move forward.

Also, I agree with professorrosado, if they don't build a loyal list, it's going to make things a lot harder.

That's my 2 cents. :)

FACT: This is not true. Google could care less if your site is updated or not. That has nothing to do with rankings.

I agree with your first point and your fourth point but disagree with the rest as being meaningful reasons why people fail at internet marketing.

In my opinion, studying your competition is not necessary. It could help you succeed, but not doing it won't make you fail. You can do your own thing. You don't have to do what your competition does.

In my opinion targeting mobile devices can be a total waste of time depending on the website. You certainly don't need to have a responsive website in order to succeed. Many, in fact most I think, websites are not responsive to mobile devices.

In my opinion and in my experience, updating a website's content is a non-factor in getting traffic from Google unless your content is date sensitive or news sensitive. The vast, vast majority of content is completely date and time independent. It simply doesn't matter. Evergreen content rules.

====>I think the main reason why people fail at internet marketing is because they get into it mistakenly thinking that it is easy to learn and that they will be making good money in a few months time. Once they realize it is probably going to take them years to really learn how to do it, they quit. They are not willing to put in the time it really takes to actually learn from experience. They want it handed to them. That is why they fail. If you are determined, you are reasonably intelligent and you put in enough time and effort, you will eventually learn the ropes.

If you start with zero knowledge about internet marketing and you put yourself in a situation where you must earn a decent income within 6 months, then you are going to end up quitting. You aren't going to get good at it that fast.

Not adapting to the new updates
I think the key for success on online marketing is adapting to the changes in the market, Google has so much change on the past 6 years and I'm not talking just about the updates Panda, Penguin... Also the social media became a very strong factor in a lot of niches. Not all marketers succeed adapting to the new times and keep focusing on methods that worked in the past.
