The origin of any community is back in 1995 when classic boards were launched online with the purpose to socialize. Since then communities developed permanently by niches - subniches etc.
1. The best place where local businesses can advertise - require for reviews, opinions etc.
2. The best place where you can contribute with real knowledge, debate on projects.
3. The best place where you can help others that may need help.
4. The best place where you can become an influencer on your niche.
5. The best place where you can get leads from.
6. The best place where you can get a link..
7. The best place where you can get traffic..
etc..

I do not know the exact cause, but google just started to pay more attention to the updates page and better evaluate regular updated websites. An example would be one of my sites, I run it because of the hobby. No SEO it, only wrote upon about my favorite game, despite the lack of links I'm almost at the top of google search results on this keyword at my country (this is non English site). So yes, reuglar updates are in today's SEO importance as most.

Google looks down on websites that aren't updated on a regular basis.

Updating your site is extremely important. You want to keep things up to snuff, current and relevant as you want your visitors to know it`s up and running! I hate looking at sites that look like they haven`t been updated for OVER a year. If the tumble weeds blow through it easily, and that`s not the way a serious site should be seen from a visitor perspective.

When you have a website, you have to look at it from the point of view of having your own business. If you had your own business, locally (a store), would you keep your products up to date? Inform customers of any changes to your services? You have to stay current.

If not, then how are you customers going to view you as a business owner?

Updating your sites then pinging, even once a month is sufficient enough :)

Natural Writer, completely agree with you.

While posting regular contents forces the Search engine crawlers to visit regularly your Website, to crawl & index all the website pages.

And this may also improve your Websites SERP Rankings, if the contents are unique & free from any errors.
