Just use .htaccess with mod rewrite rule and restrict to your IP if you have static IP if not use this:

As per app/software i would recommend Authy by twilio since it has desktop/android/ios software with email/phone nr in order if you lost any of your devices.

WPS Hide Login: Changes the default URL of the login page so bots can't find it
Limit Login Attempts Reloaded: Blocks excessive login attempts and protects website against brute force attacks

I recommend Limit Login Attempts - it blocks perfectly brute force attacks, you can set login attempts number before lock-out, you can set lock-out temporarily, not to stuff up your database with banned IPs, the plugin never caused any problems to our WP installation
