Hi guys,

I'm looking to have a VPS, including for the purpose of higher anonymity/privacy over the internet.
I heard having the server in a different country than your own, increases it.

I read this:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Other option is to rent a vps in another country, setup your own vpn service on that vps and then connect your home connection to that vps making sure the logs are wiped. That one might not be doable for you.

With vps also install a Linux distribution on it and use ssh forwarding so that you connect through ssh and then run Firefox so that Firefox starts up locally for you but you are connected remotely to it on the server.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

But before this setup i would like to do some tests with a home based VPS.
Can i achieve the same kind of anonymity/privacy with a home based VPS stack running on a 2nd laptop?
Or this defeats the purpose of such anonymity and ends up being redundant? In which case a good VPN service ends up doing a good job...

If by "home-based VPS stack running on a 2nd laptop", you mean you have virtualized a laptop at home to create a VPS from, no.
  • The reason why creating self hosted VPS from servers/computers at your home is it will either have no public IP address OR it will likely have access only to the same networks that are already provided by your residential ISP.
But if you mean renting a VPS from a provider to install VPN software, then yes.
  • A properly configured VPS with OpenVPN or Wireguard VPN offers greater privacy/anonymity than paid VPN services, such as MozillaVPN (no account details shared, VPN providers make log files of VPN sessions)
  • With personal/private VPN server created from VPS, you can tunnel all your online activity's through the VPN, your internet activity (on residential network) is masked, preventing even your ISP from logging your history.

I'm not really sure that I understand what you are asking, but if I do then it has no privacy advantage at all.

Both the computer you are using and the second one (with or without running a virtualised system on it) and then connecting to via a VPN will be be in the same physical place on the same local area network and be connecting to the internet through the same router. You would gain nothing.

Or maybe I am misunderstanding?

You understood fine!
I wasn't thinking about the basics.
I thought it would mask my home IP, mac address, everything.
It's clear the best is to use a VPS from another country.

Does it matter if it's a neighboring country or one more far away?
I know if it's on the other side of the planet it will be slower.

If your only aim is privacy then it really doesn't matter where the VPS is, it can be in the same country or on nearby or it can be on the other side of the planet, it will still have the same effect. Visits to sites, etc. that you make will show as being from the VPS IP address and geographic location instead of your home IP/location.

Main aim is privacy yes!
Of course i will still make usage of what a VPS server offers in other ways. Web Hosting etc...
Will i have increased privacy with a VPS running a VPN than Mullvad VPN at home?

@radwebhosting mentioned:

Did he mean to build my own VPN server with OpenVPN stack for example?
Which VPN stack, protocol you advise?

You cleared this point. Thanks!

I know Wireguard is used for end to end encryption, but it does not mask your internet activities.
I want both.
What personal/private VPN server created from VPS do you recommend?
Can i use it both at home (to mask my internet activities), and on the VPS server?

Otherwise I could use Mullvad VPN for my home network plus the one on the VPS. But i trust more a personal/private VPN, where no logging is recorded.

I want to be able to serve as many tunneled encrypted connections to peers as i need, and all of us being invisible on the internet.
For sensitive work and business tasks.
