For unmanaged servers you simply get the server with ssh access. You need to install script and control panels yourself.

For managed servers you get control panels like cPanel pre installed, so that you can manage the running services.

I know this thread is a bit old but... It's a bit more than that on the managed part... A managed provider will also secure your server, troubleshoot any issues you have and can monitor your sites 24/7. What you may want to look into however, is the differences between reactive management and proactive management. Reactive simply means your managed provider will address any issues you find or take care of any issues you want checked. Proactive means they are proactively managing your server all the time and you don't have to ask them to. They should be updating and finding any issues that come up by themselves. Hope this helps.

Hi there 56ajjusingh,

Not sure if you have found your answer yet, but I'm hoping that this thread stays active to provide useful information for those who are new and looking for hosting services. Most hosting companies provide limited days on-boarding support. They'll help you setup the server and make sure everything is up and running. After the expiration of limited days on-boarding support, clients who subscribe to unmanaged hosting are responsible of managing their own servers.

Unmanaged hosting means you subscribe only to the server, without its management services. This is recommended only to companies with a dedicated team or department of technical staffs, who can manage your servers (, upgrade software/OS, reboot server, maintain network, fixing errors, handling cyber attacks) if anything happens.

Managed hosting (whether it's VPS or dedicated server) means you subscribe to a web host along with its management services. These management services may include:
- pre-installed software (control panel, operating system)
- server monitoring (to look out for any component failures and replace them immediately to avoid downtime)
- security (to look out for DDoS attacks or other cyber attacks and deal with them immediately to secure data)
- software management (to automatically upgrade your OS or other software so that the software perform at its peak at all times)
- recommended to clients who don't have the technical knowledge required to manage a server.

Simply put, if there's any issues with your server, having a managed hosting requires that the web host attend to the issues immediately on your behalf. If you subscribe to unmanaged hosting, any issues would require your own immediate attention.

Happy hosting!

Unmanaged hosting: Only server will be setup and you will be provided the root access. The client has to manage the server for any security, application install, etc.

Managed hosting: Hosting provider will check all the security issues, installation, updates. The customer only has to concentrate on website promotion other all technicalities will be handled by provider. Usually, a control panel like cPanel or Plesk will be provided with managed hosting

@56ajjusingh, Your avatar suggests that you represent a data center. Does really a data center member asks a question what is the difference between Managed and Unmanaged service ;)

Managed obviously comes with technical and system administration from the infrastructure provider.

@@56ajjusingh Do whatever you like as long as the Forum administrators accept it. May I just suggest that if you are a knowledgeable person, you are supposed to ask manful questions, not questions that would make others to judge your competence. People usually ask equations to receive answers, it is as simple as that!

So if you want to ask anything, ask something you don't know or just put anything on discussion. What is managed and unmanaged can be found by one click everywhere in the web.

hi, cloud someone answer this question because I am getting confused between them.
I will make it short and basic.

Managed server hosting means the service provider itself will deal with the technical aspects like setup, administration, management of the server or the platform applications.

Unmanaged server hosting means the server is completely under the control of the customer. The customer has to take care of all of his server activities like security constraints, software Installation, and resource monitor.

In unmanaged server you will get only root access of server and you have to install everything like panels by yourself but in managed server provide will setup the complete server for you also install all the panels . They will also take backups (daily , weekly and monthly) , security implementation on server , regular optimization of server . Provider will do the need full which is required for server.

Hi 56ajjusingh,

Web hosting service which make our website accessible on the internet but for that, we need service provider. These service providers have many different types of hosting services such as shared hosting, managed hosting, unmanaged hosting. Under these plans, you will get options for VPS hosting, dedicated server hosting, KVM hosting, OpenVZ, etc. It is a very vast topic. so without going in more detail here, I am putting my points on managed vs unmanaged hosting. Hopefully, it will help you to clear your doubts.

MANAGED HOSTING:
Most people do not want to change their hosting plan because they do not have enough time to manage it. Sometimes many of them less knowledge of Linux system administration and have no idea about terminal access, SSH and shell commands. The count of such a person is really high. That is why hosting organizations currently provide managed Server Hosting.
As it is clear from the name, a hosting that is fully managed and you should not have any concerns related to server management. In MANAGED dedicated Hosting you get fully configured services by your service provider.
They will take care of your server maintenance such as updating the core, software installation, backup, security and more. It is, therefore, a relief for all entrepreneurs who do not get enough time to manage their servers and also for those who are not technically strong.

Managed Hosting includes the following points:-
• 24/7 technical support
• Backups on remote servers
• An uptime guarantee
• A control panel you can use to start/stop/restart your Dedicated server
• Server installation and initial setup
• security
• Regular updates and security audits
• Malware scans on demand

Advantage of managed Hosting:
1. Get full root access
2. Managed by service provider.
3. It can easily allocate resources.
4. Costly.
5. Give Better performance.
6. Secure

UN-Managed Hosting
Unmanaged Hosting simply means that your service provider will only maintain the availability of hardware resources. With a preloaded set of software, except for OS installation and re-installation, you will not receive any other support from your hosting provider.

Technical support is limited to some special cases such as hardware failure or service outlay. However, some hosts also provide unmanaged hosting services, which provide support for initial setup and common troubleshooting issues with limited support.
UN-Managed Hosting is the best option for those who have sufficient technical knowledge and can easily do all their server related tasks. Similarly, you should be able to manage your website database backup/restore, set up email account, manage FTP services and many other similar tasks
Sometimes it happens that you can face some technical problems and need help. In this case, most hosting companies will charge for technical support on an hourly basis. These hourly rates are very expensive compared to a managed service charge which may affect your savings.

Your Efforts While Choosing UNMANAGED HOSTING
• Install and configure third-party software.
• Configure the server firewall.
• Install the necessary software whenever required.
• Take regular backup and maintain it.
• Troubleshooting of various services
• Solve all Email, Database, and website-related issues.
• Performance checking and troubleshooting.
• Advanced Configurations.
• Install updated OS and also upgrade software if required.
• Keep your server secure from threats.
• Self Monitoring of services and set an alert mechanism.
• Migration of web contents, databases, and emails.

Apart from this entire tedious task Un-Managed Hosting is still favorable to many people. It is ideal for those who have a limited budget for running their business. Only technically good people can go with these options so be sure while choosing unmanaged Hosting plans.

Advantage:
1. Unmanaged hosting gives you full control in the form of bandwidth, memory, software installation, usage, and storage space.
2. Can customize your server according to need.
3. It is very cost-effective.
4. Software or programs that are usually not offered with shared hosting services can be used with an unmanaged hosting
account since everything is in your hands.
5. There is no need to depend on unresponsive support.
6. Unmanaged hosting is more suitable for businesses with the need for high bandwidths.

Thank you

A dedicated web server states to a single computer that provides to the requirements of a network. When it comes to web hosting, a dedicated server refers to a form of Internet hosting wherein a customer rents out an entire server, internet connection, and software from a web host.

There are mostly two types of servers. These are managed web servers and unmanaged web servers. Selecting the correct one between these two types is vital in order to make your experience on the web a positive one.

A managed host server gives the user full support. It comprises hardware, software, as well as constant updating. There are also added products and services involved in a managed web hosting server to permit a higher level of management. This type of dedicated server involves system administrators that work full time, agree to for increased productivity.

In an unmanaged dedicated server, the operator has to do the configurations and manage the operating system on their own. Unmanaged servers also involve the user to do technical support although you can get tech support at an added cost. Unmanaged dedicated servers are more reasonable compared to a managed one and it allows the user to modify the server based on individual specifications. The operator needs to have the skills to uphold the server or if not, a team knowledgeable in server maintenance can also help.

Managed hosting is one of the most popular IT service models that allow a customer to lease hardware such as network, storage, and servers. Once you obtain it, the hardware will be dedicated exclusively to you.
The best part is that with managed hosting, the service provider will be responsible for handling support, management, and administration of your IT infrastructure.
The managed hosting includes backups, managing database, storage, improving security and etc.
In unmanaged hosting the entire server administration and the responsibilities of necessary configuration and management of the virtual server is the responsibility of the end-user. Users need to have some knowledge of the administration of Linux servers. The security of an unmanaged virtual server is entirely the user’s responsibility as well.

Managed server hosting is entirely managed by the providers. Providers take all the installation, up-gradation, and updating of the desktops and servers on their shoulders. The providers handle any technical glitches or issues.

They also offer you pay as you got model which decreases the business cost. In unmanaged server hosting, none of this possible as you have to as a business owner has to manage all the mentioned things. Moreover, as an owner or person, it increases the cost as you have to install and organize all the hardware.

If your business needs are more innovative, managed servers are probably the way to go. With managed hosting, you get full-time support from server administrators who work hard to make sure things stay operational for your website so that you can focus on core business objectives.

In an unmanaged server, you will have to deal with these issues on your own if you don't have sufficient faith in the ability of your web host to manage such challenges. Many people find this extra bit of work worth the effort. Managed servers are costlier tan unmanaged ones. This is one of the prime reasons why unmanaged servers are more common despite the better functionality of managed ones.

If you are considering for a managed server that can keep you up and running, visit our site, where you can find managed hosting servers to suit your requirements!

Managed server: In this you will get all the facility like install cpanel, security, plugins etc. if you will get any problem then you can contact your provider.
Unmanaged: In unmanaged server you have to do everything by yourself. You will get administrator details an you have to performs all actions like installation, security etc at your end. You will also get all kind of help in unmanaged services.

In managed dedicated server hosting, all the technical tasks are taken care of by the web host’s technical support team. You don’t get to worry about server management and maintenance or installing updates.

In unmanaged dedicated server hosting, you're the only owner of the server and are liable for everything right from server management to updates installation.

If you need complete manage over your dedicated hosting and have the expertise to manage it for optimal performance, reliability, and security, unmanaged dedicated hosting plans are designed for you. But if you’d rather allow us to look out of the many of the day-to-day tasks involved in server management and sophisticated tasks like fixing DNS hosting, choose managed dedicated hosting.

Managed and unmanaged dedicated servers represent two different hosting solutions. They are different in terms of support and management, which is provided by the hosting owner.

In a managed dedicated server, the hosting provider manages all the tasks like server setup, software installation, backup, security as well as audit. Here, it is not necessary to have knowledge of how to control everything. Thus, one can focus on their business rather than managing it.

However, an unmanaged dedicated server stands on the opposite side of managed one. Here, there is lesser or zero support from the hosting provider. Generally, this kind of server is suitable for those who have technical knowledge of managing servers according to their specific needs.

The distinction between managed and unmanaged web servers lies in the entity responsible for their management. Managed servers are fully handled by the hosting provider, whereas unmanaged servers are the responsibility of the company utilizing them.
