I'm curious how many here run on a dedicated server or a few. I am going to moving to cloud server or a new dedicated server for better speed. I'd like to hear your share which providers are you using, how much does it cost and what kind of specs on your server? What kind of specs on the server?

I use AdvancedHosting for like 4 years and am pretty satisfied. I have a dedicated server but also think of moving to a cloud one... These guys plan to implement it soon, so hopefully the transfer wouldn't be painful.
So. my package is the simpliest one. It cost me around 150$ per month and I get 2TB HDD and16 gb DDR4 for that. I chose to maintain it on my own and didn't have any issues so far.

I have not got a dedicated server yet but I am planning to upgrade my VPS to dedicated server in the near future when my websites grow with bigger traffic and I have better revenue from them.

Yeah, it's reasonable to switch to a dedicated server when you can pay it off...same for me. I had a VPS before, but when my websites grew and started to bring me more profit I switched to dedicated servers.

What's the reason for converting to a dedicated server? Do you run a business or a website? It really depends on what you need.

We had actually....later we found it hard to maintain because of the hardware/disk issues and limitation to scale-up . So we now use all Cloud Servers and feel quite happy and flexible.

Well..Cloud is just a pseudo name I agree...we use more like the VPS in the cloud and I mentioned the Cloud as our major projects are in AWS and in vmWare private cloud :)

If you really need to host any kind of content or deliver services for a n isolated computing instance, you'd probably get a virtualized (Cloud-based) server. The reason is that, if you don't need tons of RAM and a lot of CPU it is much easier to scale up the computing resources. There is one more thing. Make sure that the web host runs a clustered (Cloud) infrastructure, not stand-alone physical services to create and provision virtual servers.

Run the numbers... What are you making in profit? What are your expenses? Is it worth it to move? Where do you see yourself in one year from now? What about five or 10 years? What many people miss is the network and only focus on the hardware specs...

I'd read through reviews with a grain of salt. Many are written by affiliates or shills. I'd also recommend only giving weight to current reviews. Providers can change radically over the years, both good and bad.

The last time I use more and more dedicated servers, because they are more reliable than usual hosting or VPS. When using a dedicated server, you can fully control the traffic and load created by your applications. For example, a dedicated server with 16 GB of RAM and a processor i5, can easily withstand around 1000-1500 unique online visitors, for the usual site on the Wordpress.
Write to me, if necessary, I can help you with choosing and buying a dedicated server.

I have hosted our main site on a dedicated server since 2001. That first server was a Pentium III 400mhz beast. VPS hosting wasn't a thing back then. But even now I elect to use a dedicated server. Single proc E5 with SSD primary. A decent dedicated server is always going to be faster and more reliable. On a VPS or Cloud you might get some dedicated resources (memory normally, CPU can be dedicated but mostly is shared) but you will always shared IO (unless on a Vultr "Dedicated Instance" type of service.

We don't even have RAID on the server. I've seen RAID break more times than you can imagine. The only downtime we ever had was when the The Planet data center had an explosion due to a faulty electrical system back in 2008. We just redirected DNS to another server where we had a copy of our site. I think it took 3 days for that little incident to resolve itself but it only impacted us for a couple of hours.

If you can afford it and if you want the speed and uptime, always choose a dedicated server.
