@Chris Worner There is something called Wikipedia 
and it does great job as a reference guide. It has a long article there titled "19-inch rack". I doubt that we'd do it better here. The enclosures used for housing of equipment have different technical specifications. What would be the reason to ask such a general question, which definitely has no place would this focus category?
