What exactly should one aim to get the most out of the web hosting?

Lets say that I want to start hosting something.

What would be the best things to aim for nowadays?

I have hosted some things, but that was a long time ago. Technology has surely changed and there are probably a lot of things I might not be aware of.

What should the ideal web hosting service have in their offer?

Lets say, I would ignore the price and aim for something that really stands out in all of the aspects.

What would those be nowadays?

The correct solution will directly depend on your requirements.

Technology is always marching forward, but that doesn't mean a regular ol' shared web hosting account isn't the perfect solution for your needs.

What are you looking to host?

If you haven't used web hosting in a while, there are some basic things you should look for:

  • SSD hosting is a must. Don't get HDD hosting. SSD will give you much better performance and reliability.
  • Check if the hosting provider supports the latest PHP (7) version, the latest MySQL version, latest Ubuntu/CentOS etc.
  • VPS hosting is easier now with all the new VPS management tools and control panels. Especially if it's managed hosting and the provider does the server work for you
  • And of course, always check the reviews a provider gets. Some hosting providers that had great services back then, may not be so great now.

I think it depends on your requirements and what you want from hosting. Let's take an example, you're looking for medium scale WordPress hosting. In such case you're looking for host that offers you CDN service for your WordPress hosted images and content. You're also looking at host that provides SSL for free or paid depending on your choice. You're also looking at host to provide you with backend updates as they arrive. As you can see depending on your requirements hosts offer should reflect. Some hosts offer similar type of offers for say Python and Ruby hosting. It all depends on what you want and some hosts may give you those feature set. So look for the latest scripts, updated language runtimes (php 6, python 3, ruby 2.5, mysql etc) along with your bandwidth and backup requirements.

OK, so, I understand the importance of an SSD. Reviews, check. I always do that anyway.

Well, I have no plans right now, although I was planning to start something in the future.

Ideas so far consider WordPress, my own website (like a personal portfolio, but more in-depth) and possibly a site for a project or two I might be running in the future, but those are just ideas for now.

As for VPS, it is completely new to me, so I don't really know how to approach it. I guess, eventually I would go for it.
