On my current VPS I am seeing available distributions:
CentOS 6.X / 7.X
Fedora
Debian
Gentoo
Open SuSe
Ubuntu (LTS)

Which distributions work best for a VPS?
I'd like to hear your advice.

CentOS 6.X / 7.X (kernel Fedora) :The most comprehensive operating system for hosting and virtualization

Ubuntu & Debian : The kernel is more stable. The most suitable platforms. But with the control panel and virtualization More not support.

Open SuSe & Gentoo : No commercial use

If you want to use cPanel, you will have to use Centos.
Otherwise, debian/ubuntu are probably a better choice because almost all new open-source technologies are running on them.

Almost all control panels excepted cPanel are running well on debian/ubuntu, and Proxmox VE is build on debian/ubuntu, Openstack and LXC are build on ubuntu and even virtualizor is now compatible with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Linux distributions are like candy, they all taste good but come in different flavors.

I would pick Debian it's been around forever is a real work horse and uses older and stable versions of most packages.
CentOS would be my pick only if cPanel was required.

Bottom line is use what you like they are all good but for business use CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu are the clear choices.

Depends on what you're going to use the VPS for. Is it for a basic PHP website? Any distro will work well with a basic LAMP/LEMP stack, it comes down to personal preference. Whether you'd like a more stable distro with older versions of the software or a rolling-release (newer version)

Gentoo is not recommended for beginners. Especially not for beginners using it as a production server.

As the others have mentioned, if you plan on using cPanel, then CentOS is a must.

Please provide us with more information about your needs/setup, so we can give you a better, more personalized recommendation.
