You can get servers from $250 (used, old model) to $10,000.

What is the purpose of the server? (Shared, VPS node, dedicated server)

How many customers do you want the server to hold?

What kind of drives are you going to use, and what size array?

1 or 2 PSU's?

Etc, etc, etc.

There is no such thing a a 'typical server'.

Also, if colo'ing, will you need to provide your own switch, PDU, UPS, Firewall?

Don't forget to have spare parts for all of your hardware also.

Understood RDO, and I knew I would get some answers like that, but what I'm trying to get an idea of then is what are the specs on a server you would buy.

Maybe give examples of the type you stated.

If it was only for shared hosting
For VPSs
For Reseller hosting accounts
Etc.

Thanks

Hi energizedit,

Yes you maybe able to get an used server for very cheap and yes $250 USD seem to be the right price. One thing I always tell people when they buy an old computer or server. Always install a new hard drive. If anything going to break let it not be the hard-drive. Anything else can be broken and you will not lose data. However if you lose the hard-drive you will lose all your works, including the customers if you do have customers.

Co-location I seen, costs can range any where from $39.99 - $59.99 per months. This depend on which town you are located it. Check around with your local data center. They may have some deal for you. It may not be the best if you only colo one server. If you colo an entire 42U rack you will get the best out of it.

Beside that two cost when you colo a server, you may want to take in some variables costs for server monitoring and management, and hardware replacement costs, wear and tear.

If you were to outright purchase a server right now for web hosting and then colocate it what would you buy, where, and what would the cost be?
You can get a server off ebay and a good one for $200 for webhosting E3-1220 or E3-1270 and colocation for a server for would be for the power which might be around 2-3A because of course it wouldn't be a up to date processor so your looking at $60-$90 of colocation. Instead of buying a new server or anything like that most people are just LTO/RTO servers and getting some good processors out of that.
