Don't most new startups or small-medium sized businesses just outsource technical support nowadays? Usually cheaper that way and if you find a reputable provider the support times are usually better too. I would've thought that the ones who hire individuals are much larger companies.
I mean why pay around £1,000 month to one employee when you can pay around £500 month plus for a full outsourced technical support team who can provide TRUE 24/7 support as in reply within minutes and resolve most issues within 1 hour and more complex problems within 3 hours.
Of course, even if you outsource support, it's nice to have a few in-house staff but it depends on the business model and how things are run, etc.
