How to protect your code and data on your web hosting?

I would protect my web scripts and codes from viewing by anyone in the cases someone can have my FTP accounts. what tools/software can I install on my hosting to protect my web codes?

If you can, disable the ftp access when you don't need it.
But after that, encrypting the code may decrease your website performances.
