What kind of skills do I need to call myself as a web hosting provider?

I know using shared hosting accounts and basic knowledge of using a managed VPS installed hosting panels (cPanel, CWP and Plesk) on it. Does this qualify me for an entry-level job as a web hosting provider? If not, what would I be qualified to do?

Hi Igor,

Yes, being a hosting provider these days is so cheap and simple. Some reseller providers will support your customers for you.
I would advise you to know about domains and how DNS works along with how to connect to FTP, POP3, IMAP etc.

Hard to advise more without knowing the technical IT subjects you have knowledge about.

If you want to become a hosting provider you have 2 choices

1. Reseller account
2. Your Own VPS

If you are hosting other peoples websites, IE providing a web hosting service, then surely you could call yourself a web hosting provider.

In terms of an entry-level position, I supposed you would be speaking of account management and customer service with rudementary developer knowledge to parse error_logs and correct permissions which if you are confident in your abilities, would validate you as entry-level. There is a LOT to learn but for entry-level I believe this would qualify you.

The most !important skill as hosting reseller is ... to know how to make a perfect coffee! Trust me you will need it :D

If you wan't to become hosting reseller you better go for VPS +WHM/cPanel .
I don't suggest going with Reseller hosting account because of the limitations you will have.

If you wish to have an entry jobs in hosting industry a nice place to start would be to be cPu certified: https://university.cpanel.net/

At least start with cPanel & WHM Administrator Certification, cPanel & WHM System Administrator I Certification and cPanel & WHM Sales Professional

What choice is easier to start reseller or my own VPS? why?

Is analyzing error_logs one of important factor for a web hosting provider? because when i asked a hosting provider to fix problems on my hosting, they will require me check my error logs or website logs.

You are hurting my brain...making a coffee cup? perfect to sell or perfect setups for a reseller hosting?

I always get advice if someone wants to start with reseller hosting, they should choose VPS +WHM/cPanel. what is the reason behind this?!

Yes, being able to parse through log files is essential. Especially for Apache, Exim, firewall used and system messages in the case of server-wide issues.

A reseller account is easier and will be better value than a VPS.
if you have a VPS and do not understand the inner workings of Linux and the Internet you will need a fully managed server, I suggest go with the reseller you can always upgrade to a VPS once you have a solid customer base.

Keep in mind that being a web hosting provider, means being a business owner. Therefore in order to be a web hosting provider, you must posses some knowledge on how to run a business.
