I am just curious when putting this question here!

I am getting confused there are how many the different types of web hosting and which one is best for you? some liked shared or cloud hosting for better uptime but more can prefer VPS or dedicated servers, all is just an estimation.

First of all, here are the different terms that will be discussed:

Shared hosting
Reseller hosting
VPS (virtual private server)
Cloud Hosting
Dedicated server
......................

In your point of view, which type of web hosting will you choose and why?

Any thoughts?

1) Shared hosting
Basic hosting package, your website is on a server with thousands of other. Cheap but forget the performance

2) Reseller Hosting
A reseller Hosting is a fixed number of shared hosting package, and you can resell them easily with a better price

3) VPS
a Vps is a virtual server, but this time you have a real server, that mean you can install what you want on it like your computer at home. The resources aren't shared anymore, there is only the disks, because you VPS is hosted on a server with several other VPS and it all use the same SSD

4) Cloud Server
The same than a VPS, but manage on a cloud infrastructure, that mean the VPS is not at the same host all the time, and it should have less downtime. Cloud server are often billed by hours

5 )Dedicated Server
This time you haven't anything shared, you have a complete server just for you. Feel free to host some VPS on it ;)

But to answer to your question about uptime, there should not have big difference between all of this packages. It will depend of the hosting provider. But the dedicated server, should not have any downtime if you manage it properly. But in fact, there is more risk to make a mistake with a dedicated, than with a classic hosting.

The only point is the amount of resources, and if it's shared or not.

I'm using only dedicated servers, for few years now, because I can setup my own VPS and have very good performances, with the best level of security and uptime.
But if I have not the budget for, I will go with a VPS, even a small with 2 GB RAM and 10GB SSD can host 15-20 website without slow down.

@FerdieQO it is a bout what one needs to do with the IT web hosting account, it is not a theoretical discussion :) Some projects can to be hosted on a Shared Account even if they do not need a lot of resources.

The best can be determine by the type of project you are carrying on. @ Virtubox nice job in explaining each hosting plans starting from shared hosting to dedicated hosting. So i will say the smaller your project you can start with shared hosting and upgrade with time. the higher the file size and traffic on your site the higher the hosting plan you will have to upgrade to.

I would choose VPS for my websites. It always provides me good features while I pay lesser than a dedicated server.
I never use dedicated servers because its price is high and I could not go with dedicated offers hence VPS is still my best option for me at this time.

It depends on which type of the business you choose then you will have a hosting according to that, example if you have a person blog with low or medium traffic then shared hosting is enough for the site. However if you have an ecommerce site with tons of traffic daily, you should choose Dedicated server or high performance VPS to host.

SHARED HOSTING

Pros
Most common use by wide variety need, from personal to small or medium business
Almost shared hosting plans are cheap but there are some specific plans with additional fee

Cons
Almost shared hosting plans come with free domain name
Always have technical support via ticket or email or forum
Easy to upgrade to higher plans when needed
Because they use a single server to share between many clients, so there are some security risks introduced
Because using sharing resources, so if your website have a huge traffic or using much cpu resources, you need to upgrade to the higher plans
If one site getting harmful for the server, others may be affected due to using shared single server.
You're maybe restricted in using some programming language and file type supported (it's based on each hosting provider)

VIRTUAL PRIVATE SERVER (VPS)

Pros
VPS is more powerful compare with shared hosting and free hosting
You will have a full and flexible control with your assigned resources

Cons
Less expensive than a full dedicated hosting plan that uses a physical server
Many VPS plans can be customized to meet your needs so you pay for what you want
You will need a little bit technical skills to manage well your hosting
More expensive than a shared hosting with clients who just want a little resource

You can see more other comparison about hosting types here

I hope this helps

Every Type of Web hosting has its advantages. It totally depends on your business needs. However, while determining which one is the best for you, the price should not be the main factor because businesses have different needs which require different hosting solutions. When you're ready to choose among the different Web hosting services, keep your unique business goals for space, control, and reliability in mind they will determine how much monthly "rent" you need to pay for VPS hosting, shared website hosting or cheapest dedicated server hosting services.

Cloud hosting has the edge over traditional hosting and its growing fast. It's performance, security and scalability beats the rest. There are a huge number developers who who use and recommend the "cloud". Managed cloud hosting is the best choice.

It all depends on your needs. If you are not sure that which one should you buy, then you can tell your needs to the hosting provider and they will suggest the best possible option for you at that time.

It really depends on ones requirements. People won't just go for a dedicated server to host their blog, go for a shared hosting if you are starting up with your business or blog and move to a vps or dedicated when your site visitors grow.

Hello,

It has already been said three times but really it depends on your needs. Sales representative or support team of your hosting company may also be the good people to talk to.
They can advice you because they probably already have adviced their customers who had the samed needs.

OP question make sense. He is asking for what reason we are choosing a hosting service, not what is the best hosting service.
And I will not trust a "sales representative" when browsing a web hosting company. That's the same when I have to repair my car, I'm not asking to the garage owner what he want to change on it;

@VirtuBox You got it wrong, a good seller will provide the best solution according to customer needs that's what i meant.
I also adviced to contact support team in case OP is not at ease with a sales representative.
