Hey guys,

I am going to discuss something about main duties of a web hosting provider. And I think there has many more responsibilities, I would like to know more.

In my personal opinion, I suppose that a hosting provider needs to maintain web server working more correct and secure. Besides, he need to check is software and hardware operation performance. And a hosting provider needs to manage clients' websites this may including web performance, database and several function. In addition, he has to have knowledge on server management...etc

And most importance part is marketing capability including SEO, social media or supporting new customers...

What about you? What is the main responsibility for you if you are a web hosting providers?

Hosting companies do not manage their customers websites. Hosting companies maintain the hosting environment (servers and network), provide support, and handle billing and customer support.

Hi @Chris Worner
Hosting companies do have most of the duties you mentioned with the exception of the correction @RDO Servers .
you also need to provide constant rapid reply to you customers, ensuring that they receive a reply ASAP (within 10min is our response time).

Now about server maintenance and the technical stuff which take most of your time, you can avoid them by purchasing a Reseller plan that also allows you to resell VPS at a discounted rate or purchase a Reseller plan for your shared plans as those tend to cause the most issues.

The main responsibility is security. And it's the biggest risk when you are providing hosting solution. You have to backup properly all customers data, as often as possible and to protect your server and your customer's servers for VPS, against bruteforce, SQL injection etc .. Because even with a good security, the breach come often of your customer's software, not updated or nulled. Last time I have scanned a WordPress website with nulled plugins used, Nod32 has detected 32+ php scripts as threads for the server.

So for me, if you have downtime it's not good for your customers, but loosing them data will be really worth.

Chris, These - "...most importance part is marketing capability including SEO, social media" - are definitely not responsibilities of any web hosted, unless they are part of a Managed Service contracts. there are different niches of the web hosting market and in each niche provides have different responsibilities.

Colocation providers for example do not manage servers of physical installations where the data is hosted. At the same time many Shared and VPS providers do not manage the infrastructure they use.

One of the most important responsibilities of any service provider is to have transparent policy and clear Terms of service which state its commitment.

That's true..
Hosting providers need to be updated with the correct functionality of the servers.

I think, the most important thing from a provider is to be fair with customers!
Just an example: If you highlight all over the website "24/7 support", "100% uptime" and stuff like this, then you better provide your customers those services. Else, everything is a lie.

And this principle can be extended to the rest of the services. I like the providers which not camouflages their policy under "Unlimited stuff". For example, if you provide limited HDD space, then told your clients what that limit is and don't thrust "Unlimited" in their face!

As I said, as a provider is important to be fair with customers.
To answer to your question: A hosting company have to provide what they promises!

My recommendation is to avoid bombastic providers unless you know exactly who they are.
