There are webpages which do not run any kind of ads, there are no hyperlinks, or anything. just crappy posts to get many visitors. the question is how do they monetize their clicks or visits? example webpage: http://mommywillplay.com/

It looks to me a like a typical "viral" "time waster" website that is monetized with display advertising.

My understanding of how this business model works goes something like this:

Publish content that appeals very strongly to the curiousity instinct of humans.

Monetize the traffic with display advertising - cost per impression - not necessarily cost per click
Monetize with pop up ads.

Generate traffic for the site by doing media buys (really cheap advertising on high traffic websites). This works only if you can buy traffic at a small fraction of what you earn in advertising revenue.

Secondary source of traffic is from social media shares.

For those sites to work they have to be able to get really cheap traffic. I think that is the key to whether or not the site is successful. Not sure why there would be some pages not running ads. I don't think that is by design though. I think the overall goal of the site is to serve up as many ad impressions as possible.

Not sure if that is what is really going on with that site or not. That is what it looks like to me though.

i agree with u in everything u have written, but i dont see any ads on this particular webpage, maybe they will add ads when their traffic grows in the future. but i see a big email subscribe bar, though i doubt they will see profit by selling email database.

I didn't see ads on their homepage, but if you click to visit an inner page, there are plenty of ads on the page. All of the inner pages I clicked on that website had display ads on them. Some were in the right hand sidebar. Some were lower on the page. But there are lots of ads on there.

in place of the ads u have mentioned, i see images leading to other posts on the same page ( like self ads :D), but that's probably because of my geographical location(i am from Georiga, country). knowing that there are ads makes everything clear :) knowing that everything is as it should be makes me happy. ( damn this perfectionism is gonna get me killed :D )

It might be. But the traffic they generate from here won't make much of a deposit in their bank account. So I am not worried about it. Actually I think it is a good topic to explore as you are seeing more and more sites based on that business model.

Hey there,

The people that own these website make them rank high in Google (somewhere in the first page ideally) and they do that through SEO (Search Engine Optimization) usually they find low competition keywords that are getting a decent amount of searches a month and they rank their website high by getting other sites to link back to theirs also while putting in those keyword phrases and using them into their post.

This makes Google read this website as it being valuable because other high authority websites are linking back to it and makes it relevant because the words the end user is looking up on Google is the same words that are in some of their articles.

So if you do this many times and have this website up for a long while Google will most likely rank you first page if theirs not much competition.

Then when people lookup those phrases on Google they get shown this persons website which they monetize using Google AdSense which places relevant ads on the side bar and every time someone clicks on the ad depending on how valuable the keyword is when the person that has the ad will pay and the guy with the website will make a small bit of money, but Google takes out some fees, but if it gets enough traffic and enough people click on the ads then this can really add up!

It just takes a while and can be quite stressful in the beginning writing all the content and stuff, but once it's up and ranking first page of Google without much competition it really is all hands-off and just consistently makes money as long as no one takes your spot on Google and people keep on searching those keywords that your rank for :)

Hope this helped :)

Adam
