My college is advising me that creating new content is better than updating old posts. In your point of view, which should you go for more SEO benefits and keyword rankings: updating old posts or creating new content?

You can do both simultaneously. Adding new and fresh content will help you to make your blog more active and fresh. While updating your old posts will help your repeated visitors. Both techniques are good for SEO as well.

It depends on a number of factors like whether the old posts have juicy inbound links or not and what keywords you want to target and whether those old posts already rank well for those keywords and things like that.

I would say that if you want to target the same keywords that your old posts target, then update and improve those old posts. If you want to target new keywords or slightly different keywords, then create a new page and link from the old pages to the new ones you want to get ranked high.

Most writers do both depending on the need and availability of fresh information or ideas.

Old post can be refreshed especially when there is an update or imminent concern related to the old one. It is just like follow-up news or series.

A new content, which has not been written before by the writer, is normally done especially if there are new product or service introductions mainly to promote and to build awareness and usage. Featured articles are also written which may directly or indirectly correlate to the product or service but focussed on wellbeing of the target market.

Creating a totally new content with fresh idea and never written before topic is a challenging but fulfilling task for writers.

Old or new contents can only be qualified as good if they perform to the interests of the markets, influence them, achieving SEO, generating more traffic, leads and sales conversions.

For me it is better if the old post will be updated to jive with the newly created content. It must me balance and well proportion to its other in order that the old post can still be used in complementing with the newly created content. But I think it will still depends on the forum or administrator that will used the said strategy.

You can use both techniques. You can update the old post as well as you can add the new post. Both are beneficial for SEO point of view. You should make sure that you are using unique contents, quality contents and use the keywords while writing the contents.

Both approaches are beneficial.

The old content is still useful. My experience is, I still love to go over those old ones and I still learn from it. I agree with the comments given here about old content updates. It may need some updates or improvements for SEO's purpose. Doing both will be for ones advantage.

Both things are very useful for benefits for seo and keyword ranking up, But thing is relevance of of content its like: suppose you are updating your old post but posting title and body has no relevance then it won't be useful, same thing goes to making new content, relevance is very important things about content, By this way content should be unique, informative, clear message about the content these are the very useful for ranking up keywords and seo.

What's the purpose of each?

If your old post is out of date, poorly formatted, or you can do something to improve it so you can get better links, go for the old post.
If the content is good quality and well formatted, create new content.

BTW, what college class teaches SEO?

I would also recommend you use both options, depending on the situation. Sometimes, when you have fresh information you would like to add, it's a good idea to update an old post instead of writing a new article, which is very similar to the old one. By updating an old post, you will avoid repetition of information and targeted keywords. As, search engines are considered to love longer and highly useful posts, you can simply update some old posts, and you can indicate the date when the article was updated. And, if you want to target new keywords, then writing a new post is the better option. Also, you need to be up-to-date with the trends, so write about what people are looking for the most, but write it in a more useful and unique way than the other people do.

it depends but just to make sure I will do both. If you update an old post meaning the existing keywords are already there and just adding or updating some.

You can do both. For the old posts, you can review it and check if it still in the fad and very informative but if not you can rewrite it, make it more useful and informative and all but if it still good, you can always retain it. You can also write new and fresh content which is the fad in the market. Both ways are significant, beneficial and essential and it can help you in both ways.

I think doing both is the way to go. You always need to be presenting your audience with fresh content , but there are times when you can update old posts with new information and ideas as well. I always enjoy seeing when an older blog post has been updated with more current perspective.
