Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for a reliable VPS hosting provider (preferably SSD-based, KVM or similar) for a small-scale but important web application with light resource usage (Node.js backend + small PostgreSQL DB).

Key requirements:

  1. Fast and responsive technical support (live chat or email)
  2. Optional daily backups
  3. Root access
  4. Datacenters in Europe or the US (low latency is ideal)

Budget: flexible, but not looking for the cheapest — more interested in stability + support quality.

Any recommendations from fellow developers or business owners here? I’m open to trying smaller providers if they have a solid track record.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

For that kind of setup, I would definitely look for a VPS rather than shared hosting.

A lightweight Node.js app with a small PostgreSQL database usually does not need huge resources, but it does benefit from a clean server environment, root access and the ability to control the stack properly.

The main things I would prioritise for your use case are:

  • KVM or similar virtualisation
  • SSD or NVMe storage
  • root access
  • a reliable Linux environment
  • optional backup options
  • a datacentre close to your users
  • a clear upgrade path
  • responsive provider support for service or platform issues
For a small but important application, stability matters more than chasing the absolute lowest price. I would also check how easy it is to upgrade later if the app grows, and whether the provider gives you a good choice of operating systems.

Node.js + PostgreSQL is a good example of a workload where an unmanaged developer VPS makes sense, because you may want control over the runtime version, process manager, firewall rules, deployment flow and database configuration.

Just remember that unmanaged VPS hosting means you are normally responsible for the server software, updates, app configuration, database setup, firewall rules and ongoing maintenance. Provider support usually covers the VPS service, network, access and platform rather than managing the application stack for you.

This page is a useful example of the kind of unmanaged VPS I would compare for that sort of project:

I would also recommend checking whether daily backups are built in or optional, because for an app with live data that can be just as important as CPU or RAM.

So yes, for a small web application like yours, I would focus on a stable SSD/NVMe VPS with root access, optional backups, sensible provider support and a clear upgrade path rather than just picking the cheapest provider.
