What is VPS?

Can someone explain VPS in a REALLY simple manner? How can someone benefit from doing so and what risks can VPS bear? Im trying to acquaint myself with the web world that's why this kind of topics is really new to me. Will someone help me out?

Hello Geoffrey,

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server.Basically, a VPS is a virtual server installed on a computer and serving several websites.Don't get confused,one computer can have several VPS's but each one must have its own operating system.It is provided by the hosting company so that you can host an application or a website.A VPS is very special.It sometimes acts as a dedicated server.How?well it allows the client to have the applications he wants running without interrupting the other VPS also operating within the same computer.Cool right?

Now it's about to get way cooler.When a client is using a VPS he has full control of the operating system for the VPS.This means he can reconfigure the VPS to meet his requirements or standards.It is safe because only one person is using the entire operating system and so no one can access your files or corrupt your system.There's an even better perk,even though you share a server with other VPS.you don't have to interrupt them when installing server applications that require you to restart your VPS server.If you are using a VPS server,then all its resources are available for you to use,for instance the RAM.There are no other users on your VPS so all the RAM is at your disposal.A VPS is the ideal choice if you have a high volume of traffic to your site,so you don't have to worry about a lot of down times and system failures.Using a VPS is relatively cheap if you consider the freedoms that you enjoy.

I don't think there is any disadvantage that comes with using a VPS.However,a problem may arise if you do not have a large volume of traffic to your site because you will be overpaying for the service when you could used shared hosting instead.I hope this information will be of help to you.

VPS is your own server with root access. You can host anything on it as it's your server. You can have any applications, software. You will have the bandwidth, resources, inode only for your service, it won't get shared with any other server. You will get dedicated resources for your service on VPS. You can manage the server in your way.

VPS is basically your own server which you will need to setup and manage from your end. You can host sites, manage databases, run backups , you can do everything what you would like to do on VPS. It's your own properly!

Server will have good up-time and security measures if you will manage it from your end as there won't be interfere of other service. You will have root SSH access too.

If your business is small and site which you are going to host do not have the heavy traffic then you can go with the VPS. You will need to setup your own server security and firewall setup.

You will need to setup the backup on the servers too. Those should be safe so if any disaster occurs, you should restore the services on your VPS easily.

VPS service 90% will be same from host to host. You will need to manage and configure it from your end as VPS are un-managed.

If you are not familiar with the server setup then you should go with the reseller service. Reseller will be the best option for small companies. You can setup your own child nameservers to maintain your own identity.

Hey,

VPS is simply a virtual environment within a single computer(server). You can benefit from a business of VPS by creating multiple virtual environments within a single server.

For example, you get a computer for X $ and create 5 virtual environments within it to resell for Y $. As long as you earn more Y than you invested X $, you benefit from it.

Now technically, these virtual environments, has shared resources of the main server divided for all of them, it has its own OS and a remote access to work with it.

You can compare it to 4 bedrooms apartment. You buy this apartment and instead of living alone, you divide it into 4 rooms and rent it for 3-4 different persons. They will have their own bedroom, but they will share a kitchen, bathroom and utilities.

Every body gave the simple answer of what a VPS is. You have the servers hardware and on top of that a hypervisor runs and on top of that your VPS will run. The VPS will have its own container or partition that is booted by the hypervisor. The hypervisor mimics the nodes hardware and virtualizes the CPU and RAM for the VPS. This is how the VPS can run a different OS or distro then what the node is running. For example running a Linux node with containers running windows.

There are differences between technologies like OpenVZ, Xen PV, Xen HVM and KVM. OpenVZ runs on the node's kernel and not really a VPS. There is a lot of software that you cannot run on a OpenVZ container. Xen PV and OpenVZ cannot run windows or other OS than Linux. Then you have Xen HVM and KVM that run more like a dedicated they have their own dedicated resources and can run Windows and other non Linux systems. These two are more of what you call a VDS virtual dedicated server than a VPS even though they get called a VPS all the time.

You can compare VPS to a public bus. You don't own it, you can't choose who's seated next to you, your legroom is really limited and you can't change the route of the bus. The main advantage is that your ride is really cheap.

Compare this to a dedicated box aka your private car: you decide where your drive it, you can seat anyone you want and you actually know what's under the hood. But it comes at a cost.

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server also known as VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server)
As the name stands for, VPS is a server divided virtually as per the needs of specific customer.
For eg: You want a dedicated server with dedicated resources, but are looking for an cost-effective solution, VPS comes into picture. You will be getting a dedicated IP alongwith dedicated RAM, harddisk but at a lesser cost as many VPS are located on a single server. (Imagine flats in an apartment to understand VPS better)

I would like to answer the question Think of a VPS server like your own personal server which you rent. a VPS is actually a physical server that is partitioned into multiple virtual servers each with protected amounts of RAM, while the CPU usage is shared by all the virtual servers that have been set up on that host machine.

So In technical terms – a Virtual Private Server is a simulation of hardware by a host operating system that allows another operating system to run on it. Thus a hosting company providing VPS can actually host multiple “Virtual” servers on one physical, or “host”, server.

VPS works just like your PC or laptop. It has its own CPU, RAM and disk space. However, VPS is always connected to the Internet. Things like bandwidth, data transfer, IP are provided make hosting applications and websites on the Internet possible. Since VPS is always connected to the Internet, there are higher chances of it being attacked by cyber criminals if not managed properly. For web hosting plans, they usually come with free SSL. You might need to setup FTP. Firewall is another option. Ask your web host how do they prevent a DDoS attack.

VPS is a dedicated part of a bare metal server. You need to install any OS on that VPS server or then you can use it.

With VPS you rent an entire server. It is necessary in cases if you have very high traffic to your website or need to setup a server in a very specific way. However, if you’re just getting started with your website, you can save money with a small portion of the server. Shared hosting and VPS main difference is that in the first case you share server with others and in other you rent an entire server to yourself.

Also, VPS is great as you have tech support from your provider and can pay for additional support. I'm happy with my time4vps provider as their customer support is highly efficient and reliable. Also, friendly. I don't need to manage all of the processes myself (as I don't understand most of it so service like that is really nice).

VPS...VPS...and VPS always are in answers' guys here but really I think we should go with a dedicated server, VPs resource only can accommodate websites with low or medium traffic.
