How many tags do you put in a WordPress post?

In every WordPress post, there is a blank box provided for us to input tags. I'm wondering if there are unwritten rules when it comes to inputting tags for a WordPress post. Like for instance, when you are writing an article, I have read that the keywords that you put in the article should not exceed 5% of the total word count. If it does exceed that percentage, the search engines might think that you are spamming.

What about tags?

-Are tags vital when it comes to SEO?
-Is there an optimum number of tags that we should put in an article?
-Should the tags be one word only or is it better if they would be composed of multiple words?

I hope that you guys would be able to answer my queries. Thanks in advance!

Google, and probably other major search engines, ignore the keywords meta tag, so the tags themselves don't help much with SEO. They do, however, help with internal linking and getting a better site structure.

There are no set limits or recommendations on the number of keywords, just don't overdo it.

As for the number of words, do whatever fits your content/site structure the most. Tags are there to help you organize and categorize (tag) your content. For example, we post Linux tutorials, web hosting articles etc. on our blog. So if we have a tutorial on how to speed up WordPress on Ubuntu, we tag it with "wordpress" and "ubuntu". We also tag all other WordPress tutorials with "wordpress", so all WordPress tutorials are grouped together. If you have more tutorials on how to speed up WordPress, it would make sense to add a "speed up wordpress" tag, so you have them all grouped together.

I think, there are no limitations of putting tags in the post. It depends on us, how we define our content through tags so that we can come in searches. Either it is one word or two word.

I also believe search engines dropped tags searching almost 10 years now.

Content and topic relevancy has been the focus, which has been a good thing. Back in the day, people were tag stuffing just about any word they could think of. They would write an article about Flowers, and then tag random things like dogs, cats, cars, music, etc.

tags are the keywords that helps the search engine to index your website when there is a search querry. tags are very helpfu; for search engine visibility. You shouldf never have a misleading tags, by misleading I mean the tags which are not directly related to the content. You should also stay away from having too many tags. It will be hard time for a search engine to discover what the content is about. Six tags per post is good. You should use the same word as tags that you have used as keywords on the body of the content.

Okay, now I'm confused. @WPCycle has stated that tags are no longer useful for SEO. Then @vinaya says that tags are quite helpful for search engines. Now which is which?

Anyways, when I'm using tags, it's been customary for me to create 4 to 5 tags per post. I haven't looked into the difference between posts with tags and without tags when it comes to search engine visibility.

Anyways, the tags should be your keywords right? And the tags and keywords should also be in the description? Is this OK or is it over optimization?

Well...tags are still useful, but search engines don't rely on them as much because of the abuse from years ago. If the content is useful and relevant, and contains a few tags...then it's ok. Sadly, years later, there's still people tag stuffing. Not as bad as years ago, but enough for Search Engines to ignore the website in question.

There used to be a recommended list of tag plugins for WordPress that many Bloggers would use. Now, they're telling people to stop using them to avoid being penalized.

There is no limit on adding number of tag but I think about 10 is ok if you don't want these are popular keywords that you can use to loosely relate your posts and make users are easy to use them

Between 5 and 10 tags is the best, when you have more tags it will reduce the chance people find you in the global tag system.

Before I though the more tags the more chances of "winning". Well apparently that's not the case, 5 or more is good enough.

You can do lots of tags, there are no limit. But make sure that it triggers keywords that people are looking for on search engines. Don't ever put irrelevant tags, always make sure that is within the topic.

Tags can certainly help you in ranking in the search engines. However, you need to limit the number of tags which you are putting in your posts. Ideally, you should be adding 3 to 5 tags in your post. Some of the things which you have to keep in mind while adding the tags are:

-Using LSI keywords
-using keywords for which you want to rank
-adding relevant keywords

As long as you are able to choose the 3 to 5 keyword tags properly in your post, you can be sure that you would be able to rank your blog posts quite easily.

In wordpress you can use lots of tags, and here is no limitations about tags. And tag is very important for a content otherwise nobody can't find your content or difficult to find out your content. You can use tags long tail and short tail, this is why you can research your keywords which keywords position are top use those keywords. By this way you can use tags in wordpress.
