No need to buy your SSL Certificates. Let's Encrypt or Cloudflare provide free ssl certificates, with the same security than paid one (Let's Encrypt even do better).

If you are looking for a free SSL cert, you should go with Let's Encrypt or Cloudflare as VirtuBox mentioned.
I am using Cloudflare SSL on my cPanel and it is easy to verify with some steps.

You can get free SSL/TLS certificate from Let's Encrypt to provide a secure connection to a website for 90 days validity terms. But it is not familiar with all hosting providers. Standard domain validation SSL certificate available from $4.

If you need to deal with ecommerce transactions and enhance customer trust, then you should choose EV SSL certificate because it requires full organization validation and enables trust visual indicators.

If you can manage the SSL provisioning yourselves and not bothered about the domain validation by a third-party SSL provider, your best bet in Let's Encrypt! Otherwise you may choose any paid certs - I am a fan of GoGetSSL for paid ones as they give it in very cheap price!

SSL Certificates vary in quality. In part, you have to understand that an SSL certificate is not only an issue of security but also an issue of trust. SSL securities with unknown signers are not trusted by all browsers, whereas an SSL certificate signed by CA is trusted. According to this guide, using a self-signed SSL certificate "causes all of your visitors to get an alarming message every time they try to access your HTTPS assets" and then they might bounce away.

SSL certificates differ on:

- Protocol support
- Key exchange support (cryptography)
- Cipher support
Now, as others have said, even if you use a sub-optimal SSL certificate you can use a security-oriented CDN provider who has a higher quality SSL-certificate. But, while that offers additional benefits (security and speed, among others), it's definitely more expensive if you are just cheaping out on the SSL certificate.

All these Let's Encrypt and other free pieces show that your business can not even afford a worthy certificate. And Let's Encrypt does not offer EV SSL, but this type of certificate gives all visual advantages (only this SSL type helps to display the green address bar in the browser).

I would also vote for Let's Encrypt. My current host offers such certificates for free with its web hosting plans, so I benefit from them and i think they are just fine.

If you are just starting out, I recommended Let's Encrypt, it's free and very easy to use.Though it doesn't give EV SSL.
But if it's an eCommerce store which includes buying and selling, I highly advise you to go for paid SSL that offers EV SSL.
Using EV SSL to display your company name will definitely create credibility and trust in the mind of your customers.
Even a big social media like Twitter knows the importance of EV SSL on their website.

No, almost all paid certificates use 2048 bits RSA keys when you can use ECDSA certificates (ECC 384 = 7048 bits) with let's encrypt. And the main issue with paid certificates is it require to manually revoke them in case of issues.
With letsencrypt you can automate the certificates installation but also the revokation.
