What kind of hosting and specs would you recommend for a site having 200+ users online all the time, it is running on a shared hosting and sometimes it get suspended by hosting provider, caused high load on the server. I need your advice, it is a website of my client. Do we need a VPS or a dedicated server for that site?

Hi, VPS hosting would do just fine.

Specifications actually depends on,
  • Type of scripts your users would run
  • Avg. Traffic volume
  • Avg. Resource consumption
  • Avg. Concurrent / active visitors

If you built server based on any random specifications, you destined to run into troubles.
There are compatibility factor also in play.

I suppose, not all users were having high load Issue* How many were they?

Please share more details for appropriate and nearly accurate answer.

Yes VPS will give you dedicated resources for the traffic and recourse utilization of your website. VPS wont affect other clients so that should avoid suspension of your website. You can also make some root level optimization on VPS which I feel would be allowed or easy on shared hosting.

A vps server is good choice
It is a custom PHP site with 130,000+ visitors per month, 200 visitors online all the time on the website.

Can you share specs should we buy for this website, what components in the VPS we should install...etc?

Thanks!

Hi,
200 active visitors got you suspended? :p

Consider, Plesk / cPanel as control panel
VPS with 2 vcpu and 2 GB Memory would be more than enough [for single site : can easily handle 1k avg. active users]
Apache as web server and Nginx as reverse caching proxy(Decreases server load) for static files [Engintron in case of cPanel]
Setup APCu / opcache [Memcache in case of multi-site] as cache.

you will find plenty tutorials for basic to-do lists.

If familiar with command line.
can give serverpilot / centminmod a shot*

In addition to that, setup CDN.

VPS would be fine. If you using an control panel like cPanel i would surgest 2-4 Core at least 4gb ram and disk size what ever you think you need.

If you need any help just ask here.

The first step would be to look at what your current hosts limits are and which resource you're hitting the limits on. Looking at your current limits + peak usage, it should give you a much clearer idea of where to look moving forward.

Feel free to share them here also for recommendations.

I'm not surprised you are hitting resource limits.
This sort of problem can be avoided completely by having your own VPS with no resource limits which I would advise you to do.

I was talking about account limits, the OP says the site is on shared hosting so hitting the account limits.
Yes a VPS or dedicated still has resource limits but no account limits.

Yes it happened sometimes. I am saying about that site on a shared hosting.
Are there any shared hosting that allows 300+ users online all the time on a site?

I got your point, in this case we don't need a dedicated server.

Yes it was on a shared plan and there are many limits there.

There are; Might cost you same as vps*

you will require around 1vcpu and 1gb ram for your web app process and additional to handle backend process / sudden spikes.
having 4gb ram and 4vcpu is good but you are not hitting that limit anytime soon*
