How Can I Get .Ca's And .Net To Rank?

Greetings!

I have a few .ca sites and a few .net, and I want them to rank better on the world wide scale. They are all doing fabulously locally, and country wide, however I want them to push the bar.

Honestly, I have tried to promote them through other world wide traffic (not paid), through the regular way of pushing it through marketing, but so far nothing seems to stick. I knew purchasing a .ca would be a challenge for getting it world wide, but at the time I wasn't thinking in that direction.

I have a vision in my head, and I want to make it happen... I just have to try harder to get it worldwide. I'm not interested in purchasing another .com domain, as we have enough websites as it is, and for renewing them all it cost a significant amount. Over the last year we have been sifting out the ones that don't pay their rent, so to speak....lol

Suggestions?

Hi NaturalWriter,

I think this thread will really help... Its a similar question along the lines of ranking for UK: http://www.webmastersun.com/threads/8315-How-to-do-SEO-to-target-UK-visitors

My recommendation is as follows:

1. On Page SEO - incorporate use of categories, sub categories deeply nested pages which are geo referenced together with keywords... Interlink these pages with creating a silo for your site... as this will help with G's crawler gaining a deeper understanding of your site. This alone can make a massive difference!!!

[EDIT NOTE - Point (2) is applicable to local SEO targeting]:
2. Off Page SEO - Approach local businesses for sponsored links or guest articles... Reach out to authority sites which are CA based and do the same thing.... Ideally get backlinks from sites which are within your geo target area... Also use social media platforms, forums, groups where it is geo referenced with placing links, ads etc... I would also consider FB ads for lead capture as it has awesome targeting capabilities e.g. location, interests, age, profession etc... Also consider Google places and yellow pages if your sites are bricks/mortar location based....

[EDIT NOTE - Point (3) is applicable to global SEO targeting]:
3. Focus efforts on getting a high authority link from a related site either through guest posting or paid via private contact. Look for good metric relating to Moz DA, Majestic CF/TF... Alternatively buy old domains which have good ranking metrics, rebuild content and overtime add your backlink (PBNs)...

I hope that helps!

Cheers,

Sid

This will just keep your website local, I wouldn't recommend it except the silo tip.

My advise would be to avoid any local links and local directories. I had a .co.za that was ranking well global and sucked locally but when I started getting links from local guys Google removed my site in the global search results.

I asked the local guys to remove my link and the global rankings improved again. Avoid using the word Canada a lot in your content as well. Get links from .com, .net, .org etc. and avoid geo targeted backlinks.

A .net can rank globally, it shouldn't give you any problems unless if you used the word Canada a lot or got links from local websites and directories.

Hope that helps.

Nytshade - That's interesting points... As such let me clarify...

I do not advocate the use of any link directories at all - as pretty much all of them have been hit hard by G... The exception is Yahoo business listings which is a paid directory... If you have a business which is "bricks and mortar" - then I recommended yellow pages/google listings which is different.... which is what I said... and not implying link directories...

I also mentioned local business for sponsored links/guest articles - however that is definitely applicable if you are trying to rank for local seo such as getting a link from a local charity group, local church for your given city, town, village etc.... there is a difference between International, National and Local SEO.... clearly you are trying to rank globally and not representing a local business which is an important difference to note....

In any cases all links should come from a site which has credibility, authority etc.... and not spammy directories etc... With that in mind one should also check metrics such as Moz DA, Majestic CF/TF etc...

I hope that clarifies any confusion buddy as I dont want to be sending out the wrong message ;-)

[EDIT NOTE: Link Building Clarification]
For local SEO target local businesses which can help improve your ranking on keywords which are competing for local keywords.
For Global SEO target authority sites which are related. Do not use local businesses.

Sid

It does awesome locally, through FB and social media... I want it to reach people worldwide. I suppose I could do FB ads and target in the US, but man, that's pricy.

Double checking the outskirts of my websites is a great idea. We might be able to play around with that as far as categories, and sub subcategories, checking over my tags, etc.

I want it to rank the same as a .com, but I think I'm going to be defeated. The site does great, but I was hoping to stretch it...lol

Thanks a lot!

Your welcome! Just to add... I would say G's Hummingbird is the biggest algo change in recent years (even more than panda, penguin etc)... So make sure to read up on that - but in sum it relates to how G crawls your site and understands it through examining content, specifically semantic relationships between keywords... Hence on-page SEO has become much more important - hence the use of silos which can really help... For example lets say you want to rank #1 for the keyword "red apples" then I would:

Create category: apples
Sub category: red apples

Articles/posts - long tail keywords: Juicy red apples, best red apples in UK, green apples vs red apples, tasty red apples etc.... Link these lower nested pages back up to the sub category "red apples" which then pushes internal link juice to tell G that this is a really important page which is awesome on the topic of red apples.... I hope that makes sense?

Have a look at wikipedia as that is a great example of a site which exploits the use of silos with internal link building... Wiki probably has more internal links that any other site on this planet... and is a great example of semantic relationships of keywords....

That aside - ranking .net sites vs. .com - in my opinion there is nothing between them in the eyes of G... Its just that there are much more .com domains which tends to be the first choice of consumers when purchasing... they probably have a better impact wrt name to web searchers than .net.... but its small in my opinion....

I would say if you can maximiize your on-page seo with use of silos then a couple of high authority backlinks can seal the deal with making a big jump on the SERPs... There is no need for aggressive link building with quantity but quality these days being the most important... Just make sure to focus on getting links which are from authority sites or social media.... and avoid the easy ones as these generally leave a footprint which G will detect i.e. penguin slap....

In addition I also buy old domains, rebuild content and use that as part of PBNs which over time provide a nice link to my money sites... Just make sure to minimize footprints so that you keep under the radar e.g. seperate hosting, whois privacy, create dud links going to other places as you do not want all outbound links to go to your money site as G will detect you are gaming the serps etc....

I very much hope that helps a bit more.... On that note - best of luck!!!

Cheers,

Sid

"How Can I Get .Ca's And .Net To Rank?"

The same way that you get any other website and its pages to rank...the extension is a non-issue in regards to SEO.

I don't quite agree with you, although I agree if we have good websites then domain extension doesn't matter but if NaturalWriter want to rank locally on your contry, go with .ca domains and .com for world wide rank.

Just my 0.02 cents
