What matters when managing domains for many client sites?

When a webmaster manages domains for many clients, renewal price is only one part of the job.

Bulk updates, DNS changes, support, transfer handling, ownership records and security can all become more important over time.

For webmasters or small hosts, what became the biggest domain management issue?

Ownership, and it is not close. Renewal price stops mattering the moment a client leaves and nobody can prove who is entitled to authorise the transfer, or the domain turns out to sit in an account opened years ago by a developer who no longer answers email.

The practical version of that is the registrant contact address. A lot of them point at a mailbox on the domain itself, so when the domain lapses or DNS breaks, every warning about it goes to an address that has stopped working. Moving contacts onto one address on a domain we control is the first thing I do when a client comes over, before anything to do with pricing.

Do you keep client domains in one account under your own name, or a separate account per client with you added as a delegate?

Separate account per client, in the client's name, with me as a technical contact. It is more work at setup and it has saved two relationships, because when someone leaves there is nothing to argue about, they change the password and I am out.

The one account approach is much easier to run right up until the day it is not. Bulk renewals, one login, one card on file, and then a client asks for their domain back and you are proving entitlement to something sitting in your own account under your own name. Your point about the contact address is the bit most people skip though. I would add checking it again a year later, because clients change email providers and nobody thinks to tell the registrar.
