If you had to start over, how would you build your video platform differently?

I recently looked back at how I’ve been running my personal video site for over a year. There were a lot of things I didn’t expect that impacted performance: from playback speed to content management. If I could start over, I would go more minimalistic, opting for a simpler, more flexible platform. What about you? If you could start over, what would be the first thing you’d change?

Not running a video site, but from building other platforms — first thing I’d change? Not overbuilding. Features feel exciting at first, then become baggage. Minimal + fast beats fancy every time, especially when you're solo.

For me, if I were starting over, I'd definitely spend more time upfront on optimizing for scalability. Initially, I underestimated how much video storage and bandwidth we'd actually need. I'd probably go with a cloud-based solution from day one, like AWS or Cloudflare Stream, instead of trying to host everything myself. I'd also prioritize mobile optimization and video compression much earlier, because most viewers turned out to be on mobile devices, and slow loading times cost us a lot of engagement in those early months. Finally, I'd choose a more streamlined content management system, something headless or API-driven to keep things lightweight, flexible, and easier to manage in the long run.

AWS S3 or similar object storage is the way to go in my opinion.
