Forum is a very interesting aspect of web. Anyone who is registered to one or more forums will have something positive to say about it. Aside the fact that it it is interesting, one learns and a lot from forums. It is a platform whereby one get to know many things. To answer your question, there are so many things that you need to do to make your forum popular. The first thing is to make your forum name easy to remember.
Secondly, there should be something unique about your forum. That is, it must be pleasant and attractive to the intended members. You should create a friendly environment and employ competent hands as your moderators. Your moderators must be friendly and not the types that ban members anyhow for simple offenses. The last in my list is to take and advertise your forum on popular social media. With this, you are good to go.

I have to respectfully disagree with some members who have stated that standalone forums aren't feasible anymore, or not they need to be an extension of another community. I think what is most important, is that, whatever market the forum is related to, has a sizable and GROWING user base. For example, forums such as Bitcoin Talk have grown substantially recently, because the number of Bitcoin users has skyrocketed.

You are saying about trending of which users are needing or searching for information :D
Bitcoin is trending now and it is reason why forums have more activities at this time.

The user-friendly design and well-organized structure and subforums are factors that have an impact on the popularity of a forum. In order for a forum to be successful, it should also load really fast and it should be secure, as there’s a login and register system. Users should know that their personal information is secured. Therefore, the forum should use SSL certificates and other services to ensure a high level of security. But, mainly, in order for a forum to be successful, it should constantly provide people with valuable and useful information. And, of course, the forum should be able to fight spam, to look more credible. In my opinion, no one will consider, for example, a hosting forum reliable if they see that it’s full of members' signatures linking to other niches (dating sites, rental websites, etc.).

It's hard to say what to do exactly because it can depend a lot on your forum and what niche it is for. But there are some essential things that you should be doing at the start like posting a lot to ensure your forum looks active for when new members look to join

Incentives for users who post quality contents? I am only guessing, but it seems like there is a lot of competition for users to become members and participate. I doubt forums are created overnight, so to speak. It probably takes a lot of work, but in the end, your work will pay off for you if you're successful.

Running an active community forum and making it popular isn’t easy. However, most forums start strong when everyone is new and enthusiastic but it dwindles over time as people lose their interest and move on. So, here I'll share what makes forums stand out among the others. But remember for being popular every time it is not essential for you to beat others rather you can simply build unique and good than the previous version. Let's look into some points that help to make your forum popular.
  1. Give audiences the reason to stay into the forum
  2. Promote community member to some higher level positions
  3. Keep engaging yourself to help them get their answers in a frequent manner
  4. Also, create some videos to inform them about the forum and how it works
  5. Give member's a weekly message informing them what's new in the community
  6. Encourage more people to subscribe to the thread and do reply and commenting
  7. Also, encourage them in case if they are doing by privately inboxing them
  8. Finally, tell them what they could get staying into it clearly.
In case if you're running any active community forum and making it popular implementing some different strategies, kindly share that in the reply below. I'll be happy to hear how it helped you.

I don't think this works effectively because everyone usually stay on social media than clicking links sharing on groups or on Facebook.

Yes it doesn't effective in some cases but not at all. You should try once facebook group that contains high members. you should keep patience and make strategy best one. One campaign doesn't work well and second one and third will surely reward you.

online marketing is not one day task or one month. You have to keep yourself on track continuously.
