Canonical URLs are most important for search engines to know which website URL should be used when seen in the search results. For example, it is much nicer to the eyer of the client to have an URL that specifies the page in words (yourpage.com/best/page/ever.html) rather than just numbers of that explicit page or post (yourpage.com/best/page?ghiyr=ygv).
It is also useful if you have lots of different subdomains for the same website and wish the search engine to know which site is the main one.

Canonical URL is mostly preferred for search engines as they lift up your links & ranking signals for the content available through multiple URL’s. Rel canonical url’s also resolve duplicate content issues. Rel=canonical usually used to sum up it within the top portion of your HTML.

A canonical tag (aka "rel canonical") is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the master copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or "duplicate" content appearing on multiple URLs. Practically speaking, the canonical tag tells search engines which version of a URL you want to appear in search results.
