Hello!

I would like to find out what is the difference between metered and unmetered VPS?

What do they do ?

Does it have to do something with web traffic ?

Metered bandwidth or speed i.e you have 1TB bandwidth if you exceed it you will be suspended. Unmetered you have 1TB bandwidth if you exceed it your internet speed will be capped but not suspended.

Some providers also provide unmetered bandwidth by giving a capped port like 100Mbps.
If you don't use much bandwidth and would like the ability to burst to say 1gbps then a metered plan is better.
If you think you may use most/all bandwidth then consider u metered

Metered Bandwidth will have limitations on bandwidth used
Unmetered Bandwidth does not have limitation and over-usage of bandwidth will not cost you additional cost.

Metered/Unmetered is usually a term to describe to bandwidth limitations. When you have metered package you either have your bandwidth totally limited or partially (limits port speed after you reach a certain amount of bandwidth). Also, when you have an unmetered bandwidth that means your bandwidth is unlimited and there should not be any limitations.

The difference is in the terms actually. It is obvious what metered means and it is very much the same with unmetered. When it comes to Internet bandwidth "Unmetered" refers to the maximum capacity of the logical (or physical) port in use for any service. So, if someone offers "1 Gbps Unmetered" this is supposed to mean that the use should be able to utilize up to 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) of internet bandwidth.

Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred in a specific amount of time. For example, if you have 100Mbps bandwidth, you can transfer up to 100Mb of data within a second. Bandwidth is a measurement of speed. Data transfer is the actual amount of data used.

Metered bandwidth means you have a limited amount of bandwidth that you pay for. Charges will apply when you exceed the set amount.

Unmetered bandwidth means there is no limitation to how much you can use, while sharing the same port with others.

Metered VPS servers get a limited amount of bandwidth measured in GB per month. Unmetered VPS servers are not given a specific amount of GB bandwidth per month but are given a specific size. That is unmetered VPS does not have limitation

Unmetered means not really continuously unlimited, but what I believe is that it has been said based on a business perspective only. The host just won't say any limits for the usage any where on their hosting plans they made.

In shared hostings, some times I saw customers making complaints that the bandwidth/quota has exceed for them even if they are said to be in unlimited hosting plans.

In most cases, the solution provided to them will be that, the bandwidth and quota will be reset for them temporarily to regain the services.

I'd like ot say that you may have VPS accounts from reliable providers: hostingsource.com and inxy.com.
They are reliable and trustworthy.

Metered Bandwidth
Your website's overall bandwidth usage is tracked with a metered bandwidth VPS plan. Your hosting company will charge you based on the amount of bandwidth your website consumes.
Assume your hosting package has a 100GB transfer capacity and a bandwidth of 70Mbps.
If your website consumes all of the data, it may face one of two outcomes, depending on the terms and conditions of your hosting provider:
  • Your website will become non - functional.
  • You'll have to pay extra fees for the more data your website uses.

Unmetered Bandwidth
The unmetered bandwidth VPS plan does not need you to keep track of how much data you use. As a result, if you choose a 70Mbps unmetered bandwidth package, your maximum speed will be 70Mbps.
Your server will be able to transfer data at a rate of 50Mbps with no limit on the amount of data it can send. As a result, you'll only pay for the speed you need, and you won't have to worry about the amount of data your server sends.

Metered servers get a precise expanse of bandwidth measured in GB per month. Our servers comprise anywhere from 5TB to 20TB of bandwidth to use each month. Overages of these amounts are then billed at $.05 per GB. Metered servers can select from 150Mbps, 10Gbps ports and 1Gbps.

Unmetered servers are not specified a precise amount of GB bandwidth each month, however is given a detailed port size. It deals 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 10Gbps unmetered ports. Clients are free to use as much bandwidth as the acquired port can handle. There is no risk of overage prices with an unmetered bandwidth idea as your usage is surpassed created on the port size you select. A 100Mbps unmetered port maxed out for a complete month would transmit incompletely 33,000GB of bandwidth. A 1Gbps port could transmit 330,000GB (or 330TB) of bandwidth if maxed out for an complete month.
