Does swap file help increasing memory?

From this post https://forumweb.hosting/13622-how-...-memory-(swap-file)-on-linux-vps-systems.html I successfully created swap file on my VPS but I don't know this really help increasing memory or not because it was used as virtual memory, how to check if it works effectively?

Bill,

It is not a kind of increase the memory, when your server physical memory runs out you can not open any other process unless you close one so to solve this we create a swap, what it does is to copy some parts of the physical memory that the process is not running to the swap freeing some space on the physical memory for the new one, now you have to realize that the swap is created on your HD an thus is slower than your computer physical memory, if you use too much swap you will see your VPS/Server degradating
