If it's a known and trustable provider, OpenVZ. If it's an unknown provider or I need Docker or something, KVM.

I know KVM can be oversold too, but it's SO easy to oversell OpenVZ that I don't trust most OpenVZ providers.

Personally, XEN, but if I only had a choice of OpenVZ or KVM I would hands down go with KVM. OpenVZ is on its way out anyways.

Go with KVM , If you are looking to use Docker on the VPS KVM is good to go as it does not require any primary changes to be done to run the docker , where as openvz node and VPS both needs to be configured in order to run docker on Openvz based VPS.

Never been a a fan of shared resources even though it is possible to over commit with KVM.
Go KVM.

All things being equal, disk space, bandwidth, memory and so on which one would you get OpenVZ or KVM.
Depends on needs. Some difference I would like to point out.

Load any ISO of your choice and run fine

OpenVZ - NO
KVM -YES

May work better even on less RAM

OpenVZ - Yes, when host OS and your openvz is same. And your VPS provider is honest and does not overload number of VMs on a node.
KVM - Your host must allocate dedicated resources, suppose if you buy a 512 MB RAM KVM and run a 64 bit OS with a control panel that consumes say 125 -256 RAM then most of the time, you will be max out the RAM usage. While idle CPU will be around 10% usage, RAM will be around 80% usage or 50% usage. Especially if you use control panels like vestacp on low end kvms.

OpenVZ - Not full virtualtization
KVM - Full Virtualization

OpenVZ - Still shared resources among fellow VM users. Just like shared hosting for easy understanding
KVM - Complete isolation, like dedicated server

OpenVZ - May or may not run windows server
KVM - Will run windows server, will run linux, overwrite with freebsd, whatever you want, you are free to run.

OpenVZ - less cost, due to its limitations discussed above
KVM - costly due to its advantages

It depends on your requirements, provider you are choosing and virtualization needs you need. Not all Open VZ VPS sellers are bad and not all KVM sellers are good. You have to try and see what works for you.

Thanks

With KVM the resources are dedicated and you are not using shared Kernel. Personally I would go with KVM for those reasons.

With KVM virtualization you can use almost any guest OS (including windows, ,freebsd and so on), you can use your own kernel (modify it), you can use different disk, network device drivers and so on and much more on, but in most cases it is more expensive

OpenVZ can be used only with linux OS and use almost any distribution, Openvz more flexible when you want to modify your VPS plan online (because in KVM you cant lower your disk space in easy way), OpenVZ have faster filesystem for guest

If some one will tell you that with KVM you will get dedicated resources then it means they are liying to you because all resources in KVM is shared.

to sumup it depens on your requirements, if you need only linux OS to keep for example an web page i recomend go with OpenVZ, if you need specific OS or modify your kernel or do something more complex then you will need KVM

There is much more different between these two virtualizations.

If you use fix resources and need stable work - KVM is better, but if you have limited budget and don`t plan to use many resources than you can choose OpenVZ

KVM, I would avoid OpenVZ like the plague...too many providers whom have no idea how to actually run OpenVZ correctly and securely leaving you at risk.

to sum it up i would say KVM is the way to go for all its boon. google a little and you will find the benifits of the same and as the above comments say, people dont really know how to take advantage of openVZ so i'd rather go for KVM

OpenVZ is far better if no overselling occurs. But, there should be overselling to be exact. So, you better go with KVM but I personally like OpenVZ more than KVM.

OpenVZ is like the shared hosting of VPSes, while KVM you have total control. As long as your host does not oversell TOO MUCH, you should be fine :) ! Search for reviews on the hosts you have in mind before making a decision, and maybe send them a support ticket to get their recommendation of what package to obtain from them. This also helps you identify the speed and quality of the support they provide

KVM is full virtual machine whereas OpenVZ is para-virtualized.In OpenVZ, resources are shared that means when you are not using full resources some other VPS is having a high load that vps will use th eresources. In KVM all vms are allocated dedicated resources such ram and cpu and disk

We recommend KVM because KVM is great for anyone who likes to have full control over their VPS like, you can install windows, any Linux flavors on KVM while OpenVZ is usually a good choice for anyone that don't have special requirements and you wont be able to change kernels, or install other operating systems. That is why openvz is more affordable than KVM.

KVM bring more flexibility network But on an Openvz you may need to contact your provider.
