Hi Wittwerch

Welcome to the biz :D

I would recommend you start with a reseller or a small VPS. Some providers will allow you to resell their VPS products. Your own dedicated server is nice however also costly.
Web hosting is a very competitive business with web hosting available for little as $1 and VPS for $5 and competition for customers is huge so a reseller will keep your costs minimal, it will take time to build a customer base if your starting from nothing and have no customers ready to sign up.

Well you can try to rent a dedicated server from any provider and make own VPS which is usefull because you will have control over your future customers, which will use these VPS. I am sure that you will save money as well if you rent a whole dedicated server instead of renting seperatly VPS.

There is another important aspect and that is if a provider suitable for your business. They should be flexible (with adding new HW), their support should be extraordinary (fixing problems ASAP - it varies problem to problem but as overall). There are some providers who offers a trial dedicated server, just try to google them and you will see.

Hello wittwerch,
You can start with a Reseller Hosting or Reseller VPS, you will have a low cost of these services are already managed. As build your customer base can migrate to a dedicated server and expand gradually.

Do you have any recommendations for dedicated server companies and how to make my own VPS with them?

Reseller VPS is a provider who usually works with SolusVM or Virtualizor and you buy a package of features, you can even create your VPS based on your package limit. Then if you buy a dedicated server of that provider it can help you migrate your VPS host node it for your dedicated server.

It depends on your requirements and needs. I would go with a smaller company - they can afford to you to provide extraordinary services = they take more care about customers than bigger hosting companies. And I would try a trial on the dedicated server. I had a discussion in another thread why a trial is so important for server provider's customers (find out more here - https://forumweb.hosting/13834-what...ook-out-with-a-dedicated-server-provider.html) where you also find some hints for the suitable provider.

I think that you should make VPS (it is easy-peasy :) on your own and there a hundreds of tutorials on the Internet. I can recommend you this one:

Before I answer, I presume you are not American. Am I correct? I ask because a portion of this answer will be about certain customs, salesmanship tactics, and marketing approaches. They are probably different here and getting new business from Americans is a little different. For instance, India and England seem more open to cold-callers and similar tactics whereas Americans hate them (lol).

Maybe I am a bit narcissistic but I am going to give you the best information you will possibly receive in this thread. I am sorry if I come off as a jerk, but I think if you want to run a U.S based web hosting company you owe it to your customers to:

1. Be able to read and write proper english. I know I am being nitpicky but some of the language (or lackthereof) in your post points that English may not be your native language (or maybe just an off day? new keyboard?)

2. Understand how the product you want to sell works. It is inexcusable to start a business simply because someone knows how to link a $20/m billing system to a $20/m reseller account and presto. Not saying this is your plan, but some food for thought.

Too many overheads with dedicated servers and even VPS. Best to start with reselling Shared, then move on to Reseller and then VPS and so on. Slow growth is not a bad thing in business.

Of course you do have a bit of a bias considering you sell "reseller hosting", so it wouldn't make much sense for you to say anything other than that reseller hosting is the way to go.

For the OP, if you want a non-biased opinion that isn't skewed by making money I can honestly tell you to avoid reselling. Learn the technology first, figure out how you are going to make a profit on your product, and then get the necessary servers to provide it. Not saying you can't build a hosting company by starting with reseller hosting, but it isn't a good way to go.

Say what now? Have you just woke up and got out of the wrong side of the bed as they say, lol. Go and have a cup of coffee before you come on here and start coming across like that. Not cool.

It does not look like OP has much experience, and I am saying OP should start small, learn and expand as he goes along, thus saving him money, which sounds like the opposite of what you said.

We sell Reseller and Dedicated, and so there is nothing "biased" about it!?

If you read our Dedicated Server page, again, you will see I only recommend a customer use one if a VPS is not up to the job. Too many customers waste money on beefy dedicated servers when they do not even need them, and by them doing that they lose a lot of money.

Perhaps I came off a bit aggressive, my apologies. The point I am trying to make is that reseller hosting is too often used as a crutch for selling a product that sometimes, your customers know more about than you do. It should be used as a tool for cheaper entry into the market (maybe), but not as an excuse to not understand how it works. What "is not cool" is playing around with peoples' data and money because you think you can play business by setting up a $20 billing panel and reseller plan.

If you are interested in starting a hosting company, don't let my words or anyone else discourage you. Now, I want to give you some pointers on where and what to learn! I would recommend you learn a basic foundation in Linux (with a focus in Ret Hat / CentOS and Debian). I think Udemy has some good paid courses (large discounts during the holidays) that will get you going. Once you get a good understanding of Linux, you will want to understand networking (How IPs work, routing) and DNS. Then, consider going through the cPanel Academy and getting some certifications.

Hope that helped :)

First you should organize a proper business plan. Check out all of the competition, see what they are offering and what you could offer. From here you should also get a proper understanding of how webhosting works and a good understanding of a control panel. How to fix small errors. Then go with a reseller web hosting package from a provider that is going to give you the most to offer your customers. As everyone posted, the web hosting industry is competitive, so in order to stay competitive with others you need to be competitive, thus you should find a company thats going to help you offer services and get you setup right off the bat at a low starting cost such as a free domain and a billing system. As you progeress and build a client base, before moving to the next step such as a semi-dedicated or vps you should have at least a basic understanding of how to operate a server within root. It helps if your server comes managed which most hosting providers offer managed services. Be sure to pick a host that has good support and fast response times as this will help you should your customers submit a ticket you can then submit a ticket with that provider and offer a fast response.

Good luck, don't ever give up on your goal!

I'm kinda against starting hosting business with a reseller account as there is a good possibility that your client might sign up directly with your reseller account provider unless you even provide them web designing, i think reseller hosting is good for web designers but not for web hosting companies

You should start with a cheap VPS and then move to a dedicated server

Atleast we started with a dedicated server, it was a small atom server but dedicated server gives complete control over what and how you configure your services
