I'm a long-time web design and graphic designer who decided to invest my spare time on studying web development back-end and front-end so I may land my next job as a web developer. I registered my domains at Godaddy and Name.com & signed up for any hosting companies. However, during the setup process, terms like DNS, VPS, shared host, firewall, setup security, HTTPS, SSL, iptables... really got me stuck, I come to realize how little I know about web hosting. Tried to Google for tutorial on the basics of web hosting techniques & some server management fundamentals, but the results weren't as my expectations. Can somebody recommend some books/resources for building up a solid understanding of of web hosting and server management?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Joe,

I'm afraid I cant recommend any good books on the topic as "web hosting and server management" is a very broad term.

Often times, the best way is to jump in with both feet. Get a reseller account with a quality provider (Not GoDaddy!!) and start playing with it. When you come across something you dont understand, Google it. If your still confused, come back here and ask us and we would be glad to help!

I've always belived you learn more by doing than being told or reading.

DNS, VPS, shared host, firewall, setup security, HTTPS, SSL, iptables
All these things are quite simple, you just need to study each one on a production server.

As RDO said a reseller account will help you learn the basics but I would recommend a VPS with full root access if your serious about learning how things work.

Yes a VPS will be a good solution to learn easily by following some tutorials. They are very good websites like howtoforge with thousands of tutorials.
And if you want a cheap vps to work, go with a provider like scaleway.com, they are not good for web hosting, but cheap and hourly billed, so that enough to work.

Hi Joe,

Are you currently hosting any sites for family or friends? Start with a Reseller account and an unmanaged VPS at a provider like Vultr or DigitalOcean.

Getting your hands dirty is the best way to learn, as others have said.

DigitalOcean's tutorials are very good.

Hey Joe,
The best way to learn web hosting and server management is learning from web hosting providers, they are hosting experts and have many experienced years in web hosting fields, they can answer you whatever things relate to web hosting. But to learn from them, firstly you need to know basic knowledge about web hosting by learning hosting tutorials from some hosting sites or forums. Don't broadly learn what you don't need , let focus on what you need for your websites.
