That's a good question and for sure my vote goes for simple words which everyone can understand... Great copywriting is based on communicating benefits without getting lost in alanguage of features or technical talk that no one understands...

Most people will not even bother to finish reading a page unless they can see very quickly what it is all about - hence good use of titles, images and clear font - all helps too...

One example that has always stuck in my mind is an ad relating to an mp3 player... The first ad said something on the lines of RAM, Gb storage, ... etc.... and another ad simply stated something like "with this you can have over 10,000 songs in your pocket..."... As you can see the second ad is simple, straight to the point and you know straight away the benefit - where as RAM, Gb and other tech specs really dont mean much to most folks....

Your best source for an answer is your own audience. What do the demographics say about it? I.E., what is your audience's education level? Assuming you have enough data, you can find that information through alexa.com.

For my music niche it's in between professional and simple. If I keep it simple then my audience will think I'm playing marbles and don't know what I'm talking about, so I always have to keep the content professional.

But not geeky though, simple to understand but PRO at the same time. So find out what content your audience like the most. You can go to forums to see what type of questions they ask the most. Check things like grammar, spelling and any slang that should help you figure out what level of content those people want.

Go to youtube, check the most popular keywords and channels to see what type of language they use and look at how the audience responds to the content. Also check out blogs, facebook groups, google plus communities etc. (wherever your audience is) and do a lot of research about them.

Then simply get started and adjust as you go till you find what works well for your audience.

JOSourcing nailed it - you have to know your audience. It's not just their educational level, but how they talk in their everyday lives. You want your content to come across just like that. See how they talk to each other on other blogs or forums. When in doubt, go for simple either way. A lot of people think professional has to be full of big fancy words, but it doesn't. It's always best to go with simpler words that make your point.

Generally, people will love simple and easy to understand content especially if you are dealing with simple products and/or targeting a wider spectrum of the market.

For products like cars, electronic products, gadgets, jewelries, health supplemets, etc., it may require both easy to understand content but with some professional touches especially on specifications.

Highly technical or specialized products targeted towards a special group in the field of manufacturing, engineering, medical industry, science, technology and research, etc. may require highly professional content to interest their target market.

Content should be focussed or driven towards your target market and the derived value to achieve your desired sales goals.

My answer to this question is it depends on the subject of the content you are making. There are topics where you don't need too much higher-level words that most of your readers can't relate to. Blogs for example are personable contents so the simpler the words used, the better. But for highly technical subjects like web hosting, SEO, etc. I think it is inevitable to use industry specific jargons to get your point across. Another thing is, just because it's understandable it doesn't mean your readers would already want to read your content. There are many factors that go into what kind of content attracts foot traffic to your site. You must always remember that you write for your audience, not yourself. Style and your personal knowledge about your target audience play a big role in your success as a contet writer.

It depends on the type of article and where you are posting it. If you would like to post the content for the technical users then there should be technical terms, if it is for general category then the contents should be simple and easy to understand.

It is always recommended to have the contents with the combination of text and images so it become interesting for the users while reading and they got engaged with the same for the more time.

SEO point of view, you should use the keywords according to your contents though it is for general user or special users. Make sure to take the audience in consideration while writing the contents. You have to convert yourself according to readers.

I refer you to Albert Einstein's quote' if you can't explain it to a six-year-old you don't understand it'. I think you should always put out content that is simple and understandable. No matter how technical the area of content you are writing. In fact, if the content is technical you should simplify it so that a layman can understand it. When you're writing online content it's for a general audience and not a professional organization. You are not writing a textbook. The age of writing in jargon is over Even in a law school class, students are now advised to write in simple plain English.

Actually, it really depends to the audience that you would be catering too. But I believe in general that it has to be easy to understand and be Professional at the same time. There are many things to consider actually for i.e. if its about a Technical product (which I am not knowledgeable by the way) I would be expecting that I would encounter jargon and different words that I am unaware of so it has to be explained in layman's term so that people like me can understand easily and be learning at the same time. Plus, it has to be professionally made.

Now if we talk about audience of an Educational System for young people, basically you have to choose words or contents which are easily understandable by children, the design of the website must match the needs and what the children want to see if they would be studying. Just an example of what my thoughts are.

For me it doesn't matter if your content is somewhat professional or not. Being authentic alone makes the content of the website/blog at its best. Authenticity of a blogger/author is important as the contents are the heart and soul of their website. There are some website that are professionally looking and the contents are impressive, but you can feel that there's a factor lacking. I'm not saying that you don't need a professional website. I'm trying to reach to the fact that there are so many websites out there that doesn't have authenticity.

Well, we have to accept the fact that being simple is better and that applies for most of everything. Most of the people would go to a simple delivery of the content. Being simple and concise make your audience have a quick and better understanding of what the content whats them to understand. After all, that is what every writer's goal - have their audience read their writings.
But sometimes it depends on the content. Like for example, if the content is about medicine, there are terms that cannot be simplified and will only depend on how would the content explain those terms.

I would pick a simple and easy to understand the content. Because what the clients want to see on your website is your content. If your content is meaningful and easy to understand then it will be a good place to visit.
