I'm currently in need of a hosting provider and would appreciate it if you could give me some insight on this. I do not know a lot of hosting providers, so I have to rely on other people's experience. I've tried Hostgator before and it's god awful. You get more downtime than you'd expect, and their customer service is near useless. But I'm well aware of it because it belongs to EIG who are notorious to be a bad company in general.

You should share abit more information regarding your requirements, budget and location. That way it will be easier to help you out. Otherwise you can check out the Shared hosting offers section and the Best web hosting section, that way you can get a better idea of what you are looking for and possibly make up a list of possible providers.

I'm currently living in Germany, and I'm just looking for a cheap, reliable shared hosting provider. I don't want to spend any more than 5$ per month, but I'm not looking for anything special either. I'm only looking for around 5-20GB of storage and around 20GB of bandwidth. Probably coming from a known hosting provider that I currently don't know about. I don't believe in "unlimited" storage and bandwidth plans anyways. :)

If your visitors are from Germany any decent shared hosting provider within europe should be fine. Your budget is good and you can get reliable hosting for that price, it might be cheaper to pay yearly. In most cases 5 GB would be enough for the average user, while "unlimited" storage is technically impossible, "unlimited" or unmetered bandwitdh is not a problem, since most decent providers don't oversell their network and servers. Unless the server is masivley oversold "unlimited" bandwithd shouldn't be an issue, usually HDD shared hosting plans are more oversold then SSD ones due the fact of higher storage capacity and account density.

As HostBastic said your best bet is to find a shared host with a Europe based server. If you have a look around these forums and Google you should be able to find reliable hosting for under $5 per month. For your budget I would expect you to be able to get an unlimited plan. Most hosting companies now use SSD rather than HDD due to the faster speed and reliability.

HostBasic:

There you have it: requirements, budget, location. From a consulting point of view, you go right to the point. Of course, we all have different requirements--and we need to really define those before choosing the host. From my research so far, there is a discrepancy between cheap and reliable--I would love to find the best host for those two categories and then upgrade later once my revenue improves. There's obviously tons of advice at this forum to help all of us research the best web hosting options.
