Hi all, need some expert help please!
So, currently I am outsourcing monitoring and software support for my Hosting server. I now think that I am equipped to handle it on my own.
Firstly, what is the most straight forward and simple to use monitoring software that can be implemented lightning fast?
Secondly, what will best practices be when regaining control from an outside source?

Thanks.

When it comes to server monitoring software, the ideal choice depends on your specific needs, the complexity of your environment, and the level of detail you require. However, for simplicity, ease of use, and quick implementation, the following are commonly recommended:
  1. Nagios Core: Open-source and very popular, Nagios offers comprehensive monitoring capabilities. It might have a bit of a learning curve but is extremely powerful once set up. There's also Nagios XI, which is a paid version with a more user-friendly interface and additional features.
  2. Zabbix: Another open-source option that is relatively straightforward to set up. It provides a wide range of monitoring features and has a user-friendly web interface.
  3. Monit: If you are looking for something lightweight and easy to configure, Monit might be the answer. It is great for simple monitoring needs, like checking if services are running and using system resources efficiently.
  4. Netdata: Known for its real-time performance monitoring and its incredibly easy setup process. Netdata provides detailed metrics and comes with pre-configured alerts.

Are you thinking to build your own or? Since hetrixtools has all what you need and it is free. You can install their linux agent script to monitor cpu, raid/disks, ram, network etc.

Offers great flexibility and a vast range of features, while being free and open-source. However, setting it up might require some technical knowledge.

I swear by Zabbix way more than I probably should, to be honest, but it is just so very useful and easy to use (once you get the right template going)
I have this popped in on a VPS, and it's all I need. To be honest, it's much better than paying for someone else's software to do the same thing (cheaper , too :))

Hetrixtools is not free .
Hetrixtools has an incredibly limited free tier . That is not free . 15 'monitors' (websites/services) is not 'free'.
No professional in their right mind would pay the prices of Hetrixtools and the like. The expenses would be catastrophic.
Zabbix, on the other hand, you're paying for the server (vps) cost, and that's it.

If you are that big of course you would need your OWN solution this is more personal use, and yes for 15 monitors it is FREE. You don't really expect someone to give you unlimited services and their wasting time and hard work to you for FREE do you?! Not to mention that hetrixtools offers upto 32 IPs blacklist monitors aswell.
Regarding Zabbix, there is not enought to have one VPS/location to ping the services location, rather more geographically locations would be fantastic (which hetrixtools has 12 locations worldwide), in which you would need more VPS to do that aswell.

I haven't been successful in installing Nagios; the setup is a bit difficult. I'm thinking of trying Zabbix instead. Does its interface run on SSH, and is it free?

Yes, Zabbix is, in fact 100% free, and is distributed in pretty much any package form you need (deb, rpm, etc). The only fees you'll ever pay will be for the VPS you set up to run it.

You can easily setup the monitor server, and the monitor packages easily via SSH yes, and it runs as a daemon (both the server and the listener)

I've also used Observium for server monitoring in the past. They have a free community edition as well as paid versions.

Hey! For a simple and fast-to-implement monitoring tool, I'd recommend starting with Nagios or Zabbix. They're both quite straightforward for basic monitoring needs.

When taking back control from an outside source, ensure you have all access credentials, understand the current setup/configuration, and maybe start with parallel monitoring (your system alongside the existing one) to ensure a smooth transition. Always keep a backup plan in case you need to revert or encounter issues.

Hi,
I suggest you to go for Centrion. It's has user friendly interface and it uses Nagios in backend.
If you want we can help you set it up for you.

Hi,

if you are looking for server monitoring with detailed report and monitoring of services, load average, cpu, usage, disk usage etc, I would recommend to use Zabbix. It is pretty easy to use and alerts are perfect. We are using it for past 8 years which was setup from scratch from our end.

That's awesome you're feeling ready to take on the monitoring yourself! For a straightforward and easy-to-use monitoring tool, you might want to check out something like Nagios or Zabbix. They're pretty popular and not too tough to get rolling with.

When it comes to taking back control from an outside source, here's a little advice: First, make sure you get all the necessary info and access credentials from them. You'll want to know exactly what they've been doing and how everything's set up. Then, ease into it—maybe start by shadowing the current setup before fully taking over. And don't forget to set up some alerts for yourself, so you'll know right away if something's up. Oh, and documentation is your friend – make sure you've got everything about your new setup written down somewhere.

Good luck with it all!

We have been using Hetrixtools for some time, it has been satisfactory and we have not seen any problems with it.
I suggest you give it a try.

Like others have mentioned Nagios is good one that you may want to use. If you like, i think Observium is another good alternative as well.
