GREEN POWER
Washington State has one of the most affordable, clean electricity, in the US. This is in large part due to hydroelectric power generation for its electricity production. Our energy production cause no direct waste in the environment is fully renewable and has a considerably lower output level of greenhouse gas emission. We are thus able to greatly reduce our carbon footprint by delivering low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to our datacenter.

MANAGING AIRFLOW
We engineer our facility with proper airflow strategies in order to reduce cooling costs and increase efficiencies. Coloinseattle uses thermal modeling to locate hot spots in our datacenter and acts accordingly to improve airflow. This includes separating our datacenter rows with hot/cold aisle containment with sheet metal and/or hanging plastic curtains.

ADJUST THE THERMOSTAT
Being a retail colocation facility, it is always hard to justify increasing the temperature of our facility to our clients. However, as more and more people understand that it’s a myth to keep datacenter at a very cold temperature in order to run equipment properly, as well as big initiatives from hardware vendors to roll out equipment that can operate in warmer environments, we are continuing to evaluate while adjusting our datacenter temperature accordingly, to save energy.

FREE COOLING
Another opportunity for energy savings is by using highly efficient power and cooling infrastructure. For instance, we have opted to use energy efficient Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS systems) in our critical power infrastructure. We also install variable fan speed capabilities in our CRAH (Air Handler) units, as well as our exhaust fans, in order to save power if it’s not necessary to run at 100% speed. Whenever possible, we always opt for Low Power CPU in our servers and we highly suggest that our client do the same. Coloinseattle is a large proponent of cloud computing and uses several choices of server virtualization technologies throughout the datacenter in order to maximize energy utilization.
