I am going to open a new forum based on Xenforo 2, can anyone suggest me some hosting companies that Xenforo can run fast on them? Do I need to have a VPS for Xenforo forum or just a shared hosting is enough?

From what I have seen on their community forum and in their requirements, you will probably have less limitation with a VPS than with a shared hosting. (php extensions, php functions disabled etc..).
With a VPS, the forum performance will depend on your server setup, I have seen some users host Xenforo with centminmod.

I agree with the above, a VPS with root access will be much more suitable for your requirements. Not to mention the I/O speed will be way higher compared to a shared hosting plan.

You can check out our current Back to School Special offer, at just $1.99 /Month.

Xenforo is pretty light and I am running XF version 1.5.x on a VPS but you quite can run it on a shared hosting.
Even Xenforo 2 is more lighter but it is being developing by XF team.

I suggest if you make your own forum, make it simple and can run smoothly without hassle.
