Good morning!

I'm looking for a VPS for my customer. We need it for video hosting & encoding for a streaming service. So, I think that it will have very high usage of CPU. So, which plan and which provider do you recommend ?

I'd like to use OVH's VPS because it have a WHMCS plugin but I don't know if they allow this kind of usage.

Thanks in advance.

You can use a kimsufi dedicated server for this purpose, i5 CPU are available for few dollars.
With a VPS, OVH allow this kind of usage, but public cloud instances will be better

Hi! If you need large disk space i suggest you choice dedicated server, but maybe VPS will be okay too, and yes you right not all DC allow streaming.

If you really need such a VPS then CPU ((AND MEMORY)) is needed depending on the method your client uses to encode, also it should be a good reputed company not to oversell CPU resources because it will mean your client is getting more CPU cores but not necessarily cpu power !...

Hard drive performance is definitely important say 100 MB/sec would do as the hardware will never exceed those speeds with a few cores and ram on that VPS ! But IMO SSD is not really a must as ssd capacities are relatively less than HDD but again the client can determine if he prefers SSD or HDD for his application :)

High Bandwidth, Good CPU, SSD Storage, Never mind about WHMCS as you can get a license from other website and just install WHMCS and enter your license and start using.

What you are mentioning will not be achieved with a VPS. You need a dedicated server for heavy usuage such as video encoding / streaming.

Exactly a dedicated server will handle requests or process videos better than a VPS.
I also tried to build a video hosted site on a VPS and it was very weight to load. It always required more server resource to process.

We built a live video streaming service for a customer using RTMP protocol and Nginx and hosted it with Rackspace. The customer got some cloud or dedicated servers from Rackspace and they worked perfectly fine for our needs. You may want to look at Wowza solutions so as they offer the live video streaming service as well as the servers for that. The prices are good and will save you hundreds of hours in server configurations and building the video streaming service.

After a few months of hard work, and dozens of bugs which took us another month to fix, we wished we went down the Wowza solution initially. Even down the road, when we encountered some major problems, we were thinking of giving up and starting from scratch with Wowza. Anyway, with enough persistence and super talented people on the team, we managed to overcome the problems and stay with the solution that we went with initially.
