I am using some managed VPS packages from different hosting companies, I read that reseller plans are good enough to host websites, I should change to reseller hosting and which is better, Reseller or VPS Hosting? I could not determine this. Your thoughts?

Thank you!

Hello, for me a VPS is better than a reseller but it depend of your hosting company.
1) A VPS should be faster than any reseller but it require a proper setup and a real server management.
2) The reseller hosting offer the ability to manage customers on a classic shared hosting.
3) Most of the times, "managed" VPS are really expensive compare to the performance provided. An unmanaged VPS will be really cheaper and hire a sysadmin to make the setup and the maintenance could be cheaper.

Before you switch to reseller account think on below questions

1) Do I have any issues with current VPS
2) How the service and Support quality is
3) How is performance

if you are just behind to save some bucks and compromising the quality then this is not going to be a wise decision.

It can go either way with Reseller hosting account and VPS e.g a Reseller hosting account can outperform a VPS with one provider, and a VPS can outperform a Reseller hosting account with a different provider. It depends on the specs and how the provider runs things. A VPS doesn't always mean it's faster than a Reseller hosting account. A VPS that costs more doesn't guarantee the speed will be better than a Reseller hosting account.

In my opinion both is good because people are constantly buying VPS and Hosting so either way both is good.

Ultimately just comes down to whether or not you feel the need to have more control over your web hosting environment. If you are happy with getting what ever your web hosting is giving you, then reseller will be suitable. If you are looking for more control (ability to further customize your web server and web hosting services) then VPS is the best way to go.

Vps need more money but you can control all root servers

A reseller will give you more for your money and less hassles with managing a node, hover a vps will give you more flexibility.

Depending on your needs, whether for resource I / O you big or small? if it's great I recommend to use the VPS. if you can manage alone I would recommend using VPS.

One has to decide whether reseller hosting is better suited for their needs or VPS hosting is more appropriate for them. If one wants only to resell hosting to their clients and earn a profit without getting too technical, then a reseller hosting plans is tailor-made for this, but if one intends to get into the intricacies of hosting then VPS hosting will offer more options to do so.

The main defect of Reseller hosting is we will not get the back end access to the server.

A Reseller Account is a good start because it's most-likely on a high performance server that's already been configured.

With a VPS, you have to configure everything, and will have license fees, especially if you wish to use stuff like LiteSpeed, Cloudlinux, Web Host Manager, etc.

I would recommend starting with a solid Reseller account then upgrading to a VPS once you have built a steady stream of revenue.

When I was use Reseller Hosting, My shared customer base was increasing day by day and customer demand me to install this or that module. I request it to my provider and some request was refused and I lost customer.

So later, I was decided to use VPS because of I will get root access and I can install any software or change configuration as I wanted.

Related issue was occurred with VPS so I moved to dedicated server in 2011. ;)

Reseller Hosting:

- Good If your reseller provides good support and resources
- No management needed, you will still get access to ssh and you will create individual cpanel accounts
- Performs much better in most cases, compared to vps with low resources
- Apart from control to use full WHM features and root ssh access, reseller is very good if you do not have experinece to manage vps.

VPS Hosting

- Good, if you can manage your server and optimize it.
- Good, if it has autohealing feature which restarts services that are stopped due to some issues
- Good, if your vps provider offer good cpu and ram with ssd and other features like cloudlinux.

Basically CPanel needs 4 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores for itself to run optimally. So anything with more than 8 GB RAM with 4 CPU cores or more for VPS is good and system admin must optimize it to get best results. If your VPS is below optimal configuration and you want to run CPanel, stay back from vps and better get a reseller that will perfom better.

Either way, you should test each provider and vps / reseller and keep your technical experinece and budget in view and decide on it. Hope this helps you. Thank you

Absolutely not truth. With rigth configured OS and cPanel, cPanel runs smooth with 3GB RAM and 2 cores.
Yes, it does runs on 3GB RAM with properly configured OS with 2 cores. I agree, but I did not said that the suggested configuration is the minimum requirments. I suggested above configuration for optimal performance. Minimal requirments and optimial configuration are different boats altogether.

Not for forget that minimum RAM required is 2 GB for CPanel itself and OS does occupy its own share of resources, considering everything. I suggested optimial configuration as

4 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores

and 8 GB RAM with 4 CPU cores or more for VPS for best probable configuration. I hope you got my point now.

Yes, 3 GB RAM is sufficient, but not optimal in most cases, Infact we ran on 1GB RAM and 1 core cpu as well. But everything have its own cons and pros.. The thread opener mentioned that he is not an expert or system admin from his post, I assume for newbies who do not know where to tweak, my suggested configuration will be much better.

For an expert like you and me, we can tweak minimal resources to maximum output as well, but we have to think from customer who does not know anything about system administration.

You can look CPanel documentation here:

https://documentation.cpanel.net/di...Guide-SystemRequirements-Hardwarerequirements

For CentOS, CloudLinux, or RHEL 7, Minimum Recommended RAM is 2 GB 64 bit architecture.

We should also remember that newbies use web based cpanel or os updates which run in browser via whm. And WHM clearly states that if the amount of ram is not sufficient during upgrade script execution, the upgrade will break in middle or it may not complete the build process correctly.

I kept all this in mind and suggested above configuration to OP. Hope this clarifies you, Thank you.

It depends upon your website type & it's tariff .If you have a high tariff volume website stick to the VPS. Scaling up in VPS is easy compared to reseller hosting. If you have medium tariff website, then you may go with reseller hosting.Managing a reseller account is easy compared to VPS.

Reseller account wont give full access to the server. VPS gives full access(root) to the server. If you are only using a vps to host the wordpress websites or selling cpanel accounts, it is better to change to a reseller if you get a good reseller account cheaper than your current vps with good features. But you have to obey your hosting providers rules, if they wont allow any PHP module or apache module or etc, you will also not able to provide it your clients.

For example, many hosting providers wont allow you install WHMCS on your reseller account or shared account

Hello there,
Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Get reseller package if you are a starter and have no knowledge of how to manage vps, updates and etc.
It is also cheaper then getting a vps and for vps you need cpanel/whm license, softa, cloudlinux, litespeed and etc .

However VPS is your own server and you can do with it what ever you want, you don't have to depend on your reseller provider at all.

Reseller is much less than the cost of the virtual server.
In virtual server license and management costs you will incur.
If you do not have enough information to manage a server. Virtual Server is not recommended.
