Hi everyone, I am reading posts on this forum and found two VPS hosting companies online.net vs ovh. they offer good price and features. I was wondering which company is the better? Online.net or OVH. Who would you go with and why?

I recommend you OVH. Both of them are providing unmanaged server, that mean they will not provide support about how to use their servers. If online.net/scaleway.com have better network speed, VPS performances are not good at all because they use cheap CPU only.

You should never have any downtime with OVH, and performances are really good but you have to be sure you are able to setup your server yourself.

As I see according to their websites online.net is offering 99.99% SLA while OVH is only 99.95% SLA. So I'd prefer to choose the higher uptime guarantees. However, I do not have personal experience with both hosts and it is better to wait for experience share or you can make your research with the help of review websites.

Yes they offer 99.99% SLA with the Business support from $499/mo and only 99.95% with the premium support for $49.95. For free you have support tickets with no response time guarantee.

Online.net like scaleway.com are Iaas (Infrastructure as a Service) providers, so they provide fully unmanaged servers and you should not have downtime with them if your server is properly setup.

OVH and Online.net both of them provides completely unmanaged servers .. that means you will not have any kind of OS level support . Basically People who are technically sound with managing the servers generally sign up with OVH and online .. Regarding the down time its you and only .. how you manage your server , server security , backups etc.. OVH provides excellent control panel from where the servers can be reinstalled , KVM access and other IP management tool.

I can hire a sysadmin or managed hosting services to manage servers from Online.net or OVH for me but even this happens I could not clarify which is really better, as @sh-admin recommended, i should go with OVH? it has better web hosting control panel and server security?

Both are good, but OVH is also not too good at support ... both of them has their own importance, it totally depends on your requirement ... You should choose it based on the usage of the server ...

Thanks.

OVH is more stable than online
What do you mean for a stable hosting in this case? Why OVH is more stable than online?

I must keep an eye on this advice :eek:hmy: and checking dedicated server packages on online.net.

Online_net_dedicated_server.jpg

What is Set-up fees: €20.00? If i can setup everything on my dedicated server then I don't need to pay them? or it is initial fee to have a dedicated server at online.net?

4 GB dedicated RAM on online.net is better than 4GB of RAM on a VPS at OVH?

If you looking for a VPS, then visit scaleway.com ... it's from ONLINE.NET .... and Setup fees for only dedicated servers and it's onetime payment for setting up dedicated servers ...

Thanks.

Online have a very good network speed but they are not able to handle ddos attack or other trouble and they can quickly close your service if you are using their resources too much.
There are also the ridiculous setup-fees with all their small servers and you have to pay them, even if that's fully unmanaged servers. Extra IPs are also to pay monthly.
But if you want to try them, you can find their offers at oneprovider.com without the setup fees.

But for the performances, the CPU Intel® C2750 (Avoton) are not good at all. Scaleway provide baremetal servers with them and that's just really slower than an OVH VPS.

I agree with VirtuBox in that OVH offers maximum DDoS protection possible all included in the price of their servers, whereas other providers usually only include a useless small amount of around 2-10Gbps which is so easy to saturate nowadays, and to increase the attack protection they want you to pay more. OVH seems to have better value for money in terms of DDoS protection, specs, features providing you can manage your own servers 100% yourself.

My vote goes to OVH.

I checked VPS and dedicated server plans on Online.net but they don't include DDOS protection on their offers, it is a hidden feature or we need to buy this extra service if go with them.

Is DDos protection something that we should put a priority on? Doesn't that only affect a very small amount of websites out there?

OVH is best when you have a good sysadmin with you . Else you might have some difficulty with them as they are not that good in support / helps. Infrastructure and value of money is more in OVH and Me also suggest OVH provided you are good in managing the servers or have a sysadmin for the same.

I do not have personal expereince with the others and I do not wish to comment on them.

That's good to know, thank for sharing. I have a business partner that has recently been looking at using them so it's good to know these kind of things.

Was their support consistently not that good or was it sometimes ok?

I know that sometimes even the better services can have support that isn't that good sometimes.

ovh are much more better, no setup fees and friendly support
Have you used both of these services? One of my business partners is considering using one of them so any good reliable input will be appreciated and passed on.

Online.net use arbor networks for their ddos protection infrastructure more about: https://www.online.net/en/dedicated-server/ddos-arbor
But its not as good as ovh one.

OVH have great ddos protection and hardwares too, and the ips are only one time payment setup fee after no monthly for this upto 256 ips. But their support its a bit lazy instead of online.net, so if you don't need much ovh support then go with ovh.

Our team has a system admin who ready to install and setup our dedicated servers, we don't care more about support, ignore that, we should select Online.net for better price, as checked their pricing is cheaper than OVH but not sure its hardware is better or not.

Good morning,

OVH has good network and servers, but their support is very slow. I had any experience with Online.net but I think many small web hosting provider in Europe (and specially in France) goes to Online.net for their servers and to do datacenter colocation.

Online.net? Never heard about that company before, i would still say to go with OVH, why? Cheaper, DDoS Protection, 99% Uptime

I am not saying that this company is bad, however it is not necessary that older companies are always good. There are already a lot of examples of so many companies that are old, but they are not good. But i am not sure about that company.

OVHs network is superior in comparison to Online.net's one, they have more datacenters globally and their ddos protection seems better. On the other hand online.net offers management as a addon service and their prices seem a bit lower.

When I should choose OVH and when I should choose online.net?
Your answer is pretty common but from what is answered here I guess i should choose OVH if I need a better DDOS service and cheaper services if i go with online.

Online have a very good network speed but they are not able to handle ddos attack or other trouble and they can quickly close your service if you are using their resources too much.
Have you ever been closed server by online when it got ddos attacks so much?
I check their ddos protection service from online and it is not free, but expensive if compared with other providers.

Then why don't you get an soyoustart, a ovh brand cheaper than ovh itself? Its same network and same ddos protection just like ovh.com.

I am not sure about soyoustart because a member on this forum said soyoustart is using hdd and Intel Xeon for their dedicated servers which can make my sites load slowly.

And it is too hard for you to research and check that soyoustart has SSD too and intel i* aswell while its no difference if is xeon or i*. Your sites load speed depend on your site optimisation and not intel xeon... don't be lazy.

Yes, I have used their services and they have suspended my server after a DDoS. But I was lucky because it was not a server used for business.

It is really a bad experience with online.net if they suspended you just after a DDoS attack and obviously their DDOS service is having problem which could not prevent from ddos attacks.

I doubt this is a disadvantage of them for big websites that wanting to have dedicated servers on their network. Most of big websites nowadays are getting ddos attack and if they don't have a good ddos protection service then it is a big problem with them.

I'd say go with Online.net but OVH offers are too flexible and the performance is too high comparing it to Online.net so I highly recommend OVH

Refurbished hardware ?
Intel Xeon E3-1270v6 are available on OVH with new NVMe disks, and all online.net dedicated servers are brand new Dell servers...

OVH or Online are good unmanaged servers providers, both of them provide unmetered bandwidth and the latest components available.
That's not exactly the same for scaleway, but their vps are cheap so..
