Looking around themeforest to find a good theme for my new blogging site but I have no experience on choosing a theme, just putting this question here hope to hear your thoughts on how to choose a good WordPress theme?

Do you consider reading feedback, demo, number of sales or portfolio of the author are important before making a decision to buy a theme for your site?

Always look in to how well the theme is made SEO wise and what SEO features it has to help you out with SEO.
Also look into the theme size as you do not want a heavy theme.
The layout of theme is of course very important and you should see if it has a page builder as @VirtuBox mentioned.

If you are considering buying a theme on ThemeForest then one thing that you will want to make sure and check is the update frequency that the developer has. Is he/she/they updating the theme regularly?

One problem that I have found with using a ThemeForest theme is that many developers/designers do not update their themes often. This can cause many issues including a security issue so make sure that they update their theme/s regularly before buying.

Keep in mind what your website is about when looking for a website them and that should be enough for you to pick a good one.. also take into consideration how easy it is to customise.

Best of luck!!

Many premium themes have free or trial version. You may want to download them to see how well they fit with the website design that you have in mind. The trial version don't have the full functionalities of the pro version, but they've enough customization features that will give you an idea how your website will look when the theme is optimized.

if you've seen a website that you actually like, you can check if it's using a Wordpress theme and find out the name of the theme that the website is using. Just right click on the site and choose 'inspect'. Press Control-F and type style.css. You'll see the name of the theme (if Wordpress) or the CSS script.

Another way to decide which theme is right for you is by reading independent reviews online.

You will want to choose a theme that can help you accomplish your goal for your website.

Take care on free themes because you also can get free malwares or virues from free themes.
Make sure that you should choose from trusted sources like Wordpress.

Yeah it is one of ways to see name or version of a Wordpress theme but if website owner removed these info then you have no choice to know it.

You are right on this, choosing a theme depends on requirements and what we are planning to build for our websites.
I often buy themes from some sources and it is easy to find a good one if I find a theme by its term.

You can find out a bit about what features are available on the theme. Mainly in terms of customization. Most premium themes on Themeforest comes with page builders which you can use to build your own pages easily. And most demos will include a few examples of the types of pages you can build. You can go through them and see whether they feel right for your website.

Make sure to check whether the theme developers offer good support as well. You can visit their support forums and go through some of the support threads people have posted. Because you might come across bugs on the theme or other issues like conflicts with plugins (happened to me once) installed on your website.

Exactly, themes nowadays are using page builder, I like that but not quite because its pretty weight when accessing to admin page to create customized pages with it.
Maybe I am familiar with traditional layouts and less effects for website themes.

Agreed, i used to read reviews before purchasing a Wordpress theme but that's not more important if the author update their theme and fixed errors there.

Usually, a WordPress theme on ThemeForest has its life demo. You can try the live demo, and look at its features whether or not matching to your blog needs. There are millions of themes on ThemeForest you can look and try. If you are choosing one, consider its features first, try them, and make some assessment to the live demo regarding the HTML structure, the loading speed, and the design. Use Google web speed test and other site assessment tools.
