It all depends on your requirements and expertise, IMO Linux is much more stable and hence more reliable than windows, but windows is is trying to replace Linux a bit by bit since windows server 2003, they have done ok but still far away from excelling on Citrix, also for some reason, many Linux sys admins are out there compared to windows and you are more likely to find support for linux related matters than windows...

Simple

If you run microsoft based programming like asp.net or similar framework that needs windows OS then choose windows server

Else

for all non microsoft scripts / programming or application choose Linux. CloudLinux OS is most stable and reliable.

I have personally hosted wordpress on windows server and linux server. The result shows that Linux is more secure, better performing and reliable.

Let me tell you, if your windows based server is infected with virus, your sites will easily get affected and may get hacked or break soon. In Linux .exe files do not execute at all by default, so from security side, Linux is far better when compared to windows.

For example, if you use wordpress based website, and you uploaded a plugin (infected with malware .exe) file, and it will start executing or spreading inside the server and may affect not only your website, but also whole server. If you install same malware plugin on CloudLinux with ClamAV running realtime, it will stop uploading the plugin itself.

Even if it is uploaded, that malware will not run as it is .exe file, and thus attack is prevented. And during regular scans, we can destroy such malware.

So there are a lot of things to suggest that Linux as better OS for servers.

Choose windows, if and only if you need to host microsoft based programmed websites and applications.

Hope this helps you.

Note:: All the above is based on my personal experience working with thousands of websites and customers over the years. Some people may or may not agree. But this is my personal opinion. Each OS have its own advantages and disadvantages. Choosing a particular OS depends on own requirements and comfort levels.

Consider:

(1) You can run Linux in Windows on a virtual machine (native)
(2) You can run Bash in Windows (native)
(3) The Windows Subsystem for Linux (translates commands meant for the Linux kernel into commands for the Windows kernel)

Windows is all you need

I am personally a Linux-fan, but technically you can run PHP sites on Windows. What was very surprising to me - PHP sites on Windows are much more common than .Net. I guess a range of people pick Windows due to they don't know Linux and don't feel comfortable in Linux. I shall admit that Windows had some advantages in technology - i.e. running multiple versions of PHP in Windows IIS was available for ages, and not available in Linux until PHPSelector in CloudLinux (2014?) and multiple PHP in Plesk (2015?). I am not yet sure you can have multiple PHP in bare Linux (w/o tools like CloudLinux or Plesk bringing that).

From troubleshooting and debug perspective I find Linux much more straightforward, but it only matters when you administer server by yourself. While in managed servers (administered by a professional for you) that won't make much difference probably.
You can run multiple php version on a basic linux distribution easily, for example with Nginx I can run php5.6, 7 and 7.1 on the same server and use the version of my choice for each website.

Consider:

(1) You can run Linux in Windows on a virtual machine (native)
(2) You can run Bash in Windows (native)
(3) The Windows Subsystem for Linux (translates commands meant for the Linux kernel into commands for the Windows kernel)

Windows is all you need
Consider also :
(1) You can run windows on a virtual machine
(2) You can't figure how much vulnerabilities are present in windows and was used by the NSA, and will be published on the web in the next few months. Last week attack with wanacrypt is a good example to choose linux for web hosting.
I do not talk about desktop or RDP usage, I also have a windows server for that purpose, but for web hosting, no way to pay for windows.

Linux and Windows are two different types of operating systems. Linux is more secure and more efficient than windows, It's also has more of the features web designers expect, so unless you have websites which need specific Windows applications, Linux is the perfect choice in my opinion.

If your website will be built with the PHP programming language, then the Linux Hosting is recommended. Although Windows servers also run PHP, this is a language native to Linux servers.

Linux hosting is based on Linux OS recommended for PHP,Pearl,Python based websites. It supports databases like MySQL,PostgreSQL etc.

Windows hosting is based on windows OS suggested only for Asp, .Net websites and MS SQL databases. It's at high cost as it's paid OS by Microsoft.

Choosing Windows or linux hosting also depends on the type of applications you want to host, like if you want to host ASP.net applications and want to work with MS-SQL and remote databases then go for windows hosting.

Linux hosting refers to shared hosting, the most popular hosting service in the industry. In fact, most of the websites are now hosted using Linux hosting due to its affordable and flexibility. Linux hosting is compatible with PHP and MySQL, which supports scripts such as WordPress, zen cart and phpBB.

You can install mod_mono and that'll enable ASP support for Linux - Apache. If you are having cPanel, you can install this module using EA4 / EA3. But it do have it's limitations and not recommended.
You can enable PHP support in Windows by installing the "PHP installer" or can manually install it. It's easy and will work better than running ASP in Linux. ( But still if you are having PHP sites then go for a Linux hosting. If it's ASP sites then go with Windows. )

I prefer to choose a Linux web hosting because Windows OS is reluctant to many virus and malware. Linux is good in security so that I can minimize the budget for a security application. However, one should consider what the web will be used. If it's for running a Windows-based online software, then you should choose Windows hosting package.

I have never used Linux before so I's straight out say Windows. Well for one, it is much more popular in my country which means easier access to computer experts when something goes wrong with my computer. Next, I'm used to this program that I refuse to change it. I can barely use a Mac considering I have tried doing so quite a few times.

Linux is overrated in terms of web hosting and probably because of its stability performance. Windows is kinda weird when common or unusual error occurred, it's not always stable, always 101 error crap. But I think they are great in providing trouble-shooting techniques.

Linus and Windows both operating system have there own advantage and disadvantages which hosting you use is depend on your need. Most of cases, Linux distribution will usually be best. Windows Server is most commonly used by businesses that need some specific application infrastructure provided by Microsoft, such as Sharepoint , Exchange, or .NET.

My preference is hosting on Windows over Linux as it gives the following advantages:
1. Windows Hosting is compatible to every 'Windows' products such as 'Access' and '.Net Framework'.
2. Knowing that the hosting is in Windows, the ease of use is almost out of the question since it will utilize a Windows based server which makes the learning process easier since there is no need to learn a new language in maintaining your website.

Generally speaking what we recommend is Linux for pretty much everything unless you have a specific use case such as Game Servers in which case Windows may be the better/only option. Linux is just so much easier to manage, more secure and in most cases completely free.

It depends on what distribution of Linux you are running. All of the big names do receive frequent updates. It's your job (or whoever manages your servers) to keep on top of them though, you wouldn't necessarily receive a popup notification of updates to install on a Linux server like you would on a Windows server!

A Linux server can offer you many advantages over a Windows server if you wish to save money on your web hosting package or if you want to be sure that the server hosting service which you are using can offer you good value for money when compared to the offerings of other web hosting companies.
