I have found a PR4 expired domain for just over $35. Domain was registered in 2013 and looks legit.

Would it be worth purchasing?
What are the things I can do with these domains like that?

Keep in mind, page rank has not been updated publically for a long time.

It could have been a PR4 at the last update, but is a PR0 now.....

PR is not really good measurement anymore, but for provider they are still great for marketing since most of the people still count them as valueable. So you shouldn't expect the power of the PR, for the thing you can do with it would be to make money from it as the backlink platform.

But if you're going to use it for blogging and hoping that the PR will help you rank easier don't do that. If you're not going to provide any backlink service i don't think it worth money at all.

The last PR update was in Dec 2013.... That doesn't leave much time for a brand new domain registered in 2013 to gain PR4 status, especially if we are talking a matter of months... Hence my initial reaction is that the site in question picked up fake PR status on the last update.... Here is one quick way to check:

1) Go to the wayback machine and enter the website URL.
2) Click on the snapshots which have been crawled.. You can see how the website looked... If it redirects to another URL then 100% it is a fake... If the website has rich content etc then it may be legit...

In addition you should also check out the backlinks of the website and the quality of each respective website which provides a link... You may find some are inactive/removed... If you find lots of spam links accumulated then dont bother... This means the website was used as part of "crash and burn" and is completely useless...

Finally you should check how the website ranks and responds in Google search... In the extreme case if it does not even rank for its own domain - then do not bother as the domain has been penalized...

Hope that helps!

At this point, since it has been so long since a PR update, I would not buy any domain based on PR.

Yes, it can be valuable to get a PR3 website, depending on the link quality as elcidofaguy points out.
- good for guest blogs of high quality
- good for long, rich content
- good if its aged and you can renew the domain before it lapses

I do not agree the idea "Pr is not important anymore" . Pagerank is still valuable. If you register that domain, you get the backlinks counted before. So it means, trustflow, domain authority, page authority etc.

If you have a project get it.

Seriously this is not good advice... PR has not been updated to the public since Dec 2013 and there are no plans to do so... A lot can happen in that time such as a website getting spammed to death and consequently its far from being a PR4 in the eyes of Google... Also dont forget a lot of PR sites are fake too... As time drags on PR is becoming much less reliable... I mean its more than 2 years since the last update - are you gonna keep using this metric 5 years, 10 years etc from now? Also what about sites created after Dec 2013?

My best advice is that you manually check the backlinks, the quality of sites as well as 3rd party metrics e.g. CF/TF/DA/PA, site link structure etc as part of your analysis.... Above all do not base it on one metric i.e. outdated PR or on specific 3rd party metrics.... Your assessment needs to be based on many factors..

I also recommend all to consider what the OP stated... A domain registered in 2013 - meaning less than one year for it to achieve PR4 status... Surely that should raise alarm bells for further investigation as I outlined under post #4.

Fake pagerank checkers can be used. And you are right, last update was on december 2013. And the alarm bells may be ringing at the moment for the pagerank status. But i wanted to tell that if that domain has a real pagerank, it means that domain was refered by other domains in the past. So you may have some quality backlinks. Of course you have to check all of these before registering it.

Go and check the link profile of the domain, see what's up with it. This is my best advice I can give you.

If it has a bad link profile, don't buy it.

To base your decision on PR alone is not a good idea. You have to really double check the domain in question with other link tools, such as: Ahrefs, MajesticSEO and look at the quality of the links, are they spammy nonrelevant links? Also how many links, referring domains does the domain have. Also look at the anchor text profile is it spammy? You should also check the domain to see what the site looked like previously and check for spam, tools to help you check are: Archive.org, and Screenshots.com. Yes, I agree with the above, PR alone is not an indication of the quality of a domain, you need to verify with other tools. Hope this helps.

Bottom line, is to do your homework on it. Check that the sites PR is not faked, check the anchortext distribution of the backlinks, to ensure it doesn't look unnatural, use the wayback machine, archive to see what type of site was on it before. All these will help you decide. If it all checks out then at $35 its a snip, although it does sound cheap to me, and i do purchase alot of aged expired and expiring domains for a 301 redirect service i offer, so i would be surprised if its all OK.

When buying an expired domain you want to look at many different things before buying it. You should try to see how many backlinks it has and what sites those backlinks come from. You also should go and try to see what was on the site previously. You can use archive.org and/or screenshots.com and they will show you (if it was crawled) what was previously on the site.

Google still uses PageRank as a ranking factor but they stopped the public from being able to see what the Pagerank for websites/domains is. They keep the information to themselves and it's probably because they don't want someone to try to game their rankings.

I would look at the things I listed above and try to check any other information that you can find out about a domain, just to make sure there wasn't something bad on the site the domain was used for previously.

Plus buying an expired domain always comes with the chance that the domain has a Google penalty and then you'd have to try to submit a reconsideration request to try to get the penalty lifted. There are some sites that claim to be able to tell you if there is a Google penalty or not but they are not always accurate and are sometimes wrong.

Research and caution should be used when buying an expired domain. There are good ones out there but they aren't always easy to find.

Hello

I would first check the website popularity using Alexa, then do backlink research. See which site has links to this site, relevancy of those sites. And decide on purchasing this domain.

I agree with the backlink research as those are the most important but the Alexa numbers are only traffic numbers and Alexa's stats are sometimes way off.

Yes, this is true that PAGERANK is not an important factor now, check the following things like DA,PA,TF,CF, Alexa Rank, Backlinks & history from way back machine.

Yes, I would recommend buying the expired domain, if this is good on all above parameters.

Pagerank is just as important as it has been in the past but now we as the general public have no idea what the Pagerank of any website is. Google is keeping the information to themselves.

relevancy is the new PageRank now. Nowdays, links having less or without links also getting ranking very easily because they are good in other factors like content, speed, user experience

I agree that relevancy in links is important but how can you check the relevancy? They don't have any relevancy checkers to use to tell so it's just a judgement call and generalized. It's just something that is opinion.

What are the other domain metrics that domain possesses?

How many backlinks does the domain contain and also has that domain been penalized previously.
